Quantum theory of interferometers with phase-conjugate mirrors

Abstract

The quantum-statistical characteristics of the field at the output port of an interferometer with a phase-conjugate mirror are evaluated. The explicit form of the density matrix of the field at the output port is given. The effect of an attenuator in the other arm of the interferometer is also discussed.

Quantum statistics of the light generated by phase-conjugate resonators

G. S. Agarwal, Alexander L. Gaeta, Robert W. Boyd

We examine the quantum noise characteristics of the field produced by a phase-conjugate resonator formed from two mirrors, one of which is a phase-conjugate mirror. We show that the output field on the side of the phase-conjugate mirror can be completely squeezed. Numerical results for the quantum-statistical properties of the forward and backward output fields are given as functions of the reflectivities of the two mirrors.

Wigner-function Description of Quantum Noise in Interferometers

G. S. Agarwal

A quantum-statistical description of noise in interferometers is given in terms of the Wigner distribution function. The interferometer may contain an amplifier in one of its arms. The input field can be in a variety of states such as a Fock state, a coherent state or a squeezed coherent state. The Wigner function of the output field at the detector is shown to have a general Gaussian form with non-zero complex field amplitude and with other parameters related to the characteristics of the input field, amplifier and beam splitters, etc. An explicit form of the photon-number distribution is given. Higher-order correlations of the output field can be obtained from the Gaussian property of the Wigner function.

Fields generated by a Fabry–Perot interferometer with a phase-conjugate mirror

Manuel Nieto‐Vesperinas

We study theoretically a Fabry–Perot interferometer with one phase-conjugate mirror. Comparisons with results previously obtained by Kastler [ Appl. Opt.1, 17 ( 1962)] for an ordinary Fabry–Perot interferometer are made. Specifically, we discuss the field intensity of the light both outside and inside the interferometer. We also study the intensity of the exterior field that is due to atoms radiating incoherently inside the interferometer. The operating characteristics below the threshold of the interferometer when it is filled with a gain medium are also analyzed and are found to be different from those of the ordinary interferometer. Finally, conditions are obtained under which the cavity can act as a regenerative amplifier.

Quantum noise properties of phase conjugate mirrors

Alexander L. Gaeta, Robert W. Boyd

We investigate theoretically the quantum electrodynamic properties of the phase conjugation process. Based on the requirement that the reflected (conjugate) field must obey proper communication relations,1 we find that the reflected field contains a noise contribution due to the phase conjugate mirror (PCM). To calculate the statistical properties of the field leaving the PCM, we use the diagonal coherent state representation for the density operator of the reflected field.

Theory of Single-photon Interference Experiments

M. Ley, R. Loudon

Expressions are derived for the density matrix elements appropriate to single-quantum excitation of the two arms of optical interferometers where an amplifier is inserted into one of the arms. The results are used to calculate mean intensities, correlations and photon number distributions for the outputs of Michelson and Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometers. It is concluded that the noise output of the amplifier obscures quantum effects in the interferometer responses.

Coherent Entangled States, Quantum Mechanics and Relativity

Augusto Garuccio

The behavior of a phase conjugate mirror is discussed and the result of an experiment with a Michelson interferometer with a phase-conjugate mirror is described and commented. This interferometer has been proposed to be used to test the intrinsic non-locality of quantum mechanics. In this paper it is presented a new version of the experimental setup in which entangled coherent states are produced and used.
