Effects of spontaneously generated coherence in a microwave-driven four-level atomic system

Aijun Li, Xiaoli Song, Xiaogang Wei +2 more

The effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on spontaneous emission and dynamical evolution of a microwave-driven four-level atomic system is studied. Interesting phenomena due to SGC, such as spectral-line narrowing, spectra-line enhancement, spectral-line suppression, and fluorescence quenching, are shown in the spontaneous emission spectra, which can be effectively modulated by amplitude and phase of the microwave field. Due to SGC, the total populations are partly, even completely, trapped in upper levels in steady state, the decay time of which is sensitive to the phase of the microwave field. In the dressed state picture, multiple SGC arise during the process of three close-lying states decaying to the same state. The corresponding experiment to observe the expected phenomena related to SGC can be more conveniently realized in atoms, since no rigorous conditions are required and the amplitude and phase of the microwave field can be conveniently controlled.

Gain spectrum of a laser-driven tripod-type atom dynamically induced in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence

Si-Cong Tian, Ren-Gang Wan, Zhi‐Hui Kang +4 more

We examine the absorption of a weak probe beam in a laser-driven tripod-type atom with three closely lying ground levels, where both the driving and probe lasers interact simultaneously with the three transitions. The effects of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) are taken into account. We introduce dipole moments in the dressed-state picture and the Hamiltonian in terms of the dressed states describing the interaction between the probe and the atom. Gain spectrum under various conditions are presented and analyzed. We show that the spectral structure and the gain amplitude of the probe are strongly influenced by the effect of SGC and the frequency separation of the three closely lying ground levels. The tripod-type atomic system with quantum interference in spontaneous emission can be simulated in the dressed-state picture of a coherently driven four-level N-type system where no SGC effect exists.
