Abstract

Diagonalization of integrable spin chain Hamiltonians by the quantum inverse scattering method gives rise to the connection with representation theory of different (quantum) algebras. Extending the Schur-Weyl duality between sl2 and the symmetric group SN from the case of the isotropic spin 1/2 chain (XXX-model) to a general spin chains related to the Temperley-Lieb algebra TLN(q) one finds a new quantum algebra Uq(n) with the representation ring equivalent to the sl2 one.

Algebraic and Functional Bethe Ansatz for the Integrable XXX Spin Chain

Patrick Kaftan

Properties of the XXX spin chain will be obtained through quantum inverse scattering methods. Starting with the one dimensional homogeneous model, the algebraic Bethe ansatz will be applied to obtain the Hamiltonian and corresponding spectrum of the system. The model will be expanded into the inhomogeneous spin chain for the application of the functional Bethe ansatz. Comparing the results of both methods we obtain the full set of mathematical properties of the spin chain.

Bethe ansatz solvable multi-chain quantum systems

Andrei A. Zvyagin

In this article we review recent developments in the one-dimensional Bethe ansatz solvable multi-chain quantum models. The algebraic version of the Bethe ansatz (the quantum inverse scattering method) permits us to construct new families of integrable Hamiltonians using simple generalizations of the well known constructions of the single-chain model. First we consider the easiest example (`basic' model) of this class of models: the antiferromagnetic two-chain spin-1/2 model with the nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour spin-frustrating interactions (zigzag chain). We show how the algebra of the quantum inverse scattering method works for this model, and what are the important features of the Hamiltonian (which reveal the topological properties of two dimensions together with the one-dimensional properties). We consider the solution of the Bethe ansatz for the ground state (in particular, commensurate-incommensurate quantum phase transitions present due to competing spin-frustrating interactions are discussed) and construct the thermal Bethe ansatz (in the form of the `quantum transfer matrix') for this model. Then possible generalizations of the basic model are considered: an inclusion of a magnetic anisotropy, higher-spin representations (including the important case of a quantum ferrimagnet), the multi-chain case, internal degrees of freedom of particles at each site, etc. We observe the similarities and differences between this class of models and related exactly solvable models: other groups of multi-chain lattice models, quantum field theory models and magnetic impurity (Kondo-like) models. Finally, the behaviour of non-integrable (less constrained) multi-chain quantum models is discussed.

BETHE ANSATZ SOLUTIONS FOR TEMPERLEY–LIEB QUANTUM SPIN CHAINS

R. C. T. Ghiotto, André Luiz Malvezzi

We solve the spectrum of quantum spin chains based on representations of the Temperley–Lieb algebra associated with the quantum groups [Formula: see text] for Xn=A1, Bn, Cn and Dn. The tool is a modified version of the coordinate Bethe ansatz through a suitable choice of the Bethe states which give to all models the same status relative to their diagonalization. All these models have equivalent spectra up to degeneracies and the spectra of the lower-dimensional representations are contained in the higher-dimensional ones. Periodic boundary conditions, free boundary conditions and closed nonlocal boundary conditions are considered. Periodic boundary conditions, unlike free boundary conditions, break quantum group invariance. For closed nonlocal cases the models are quantum group invariant as well as periodic in a certain sense.

Aspects of Integrable Models

Pranav Diwakar

The objective of this thesis is to study the isotropic XXX-1/2 spin chain model using the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. To this end, we discuss the concept of integrability as well as the Lax operator and R-matrix, which help generate as many commuting operators in involution as there are degrees of freedom. We establish that the spin chain Hamiltonian belongs to this set and provide a definition of a state vector whose parameters, the Bethe roots, are constrained by a set of equations called the Bethe Ansatz Equations. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the Bethe roots and the eigenfunctions of the system. Next, we proceed to study the nature of the low-lying excitations of both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic model in the thermodynamic limit N → ∞ and show that the Bethe roots can be grouped into complexes or strings, which behave like bound states. We see that integrability is directly related to diffractionless scattering, which is obeyed by systems whose scattering matrices satisfy the Yang-Baxter Equation. In order to provide a more physical interpretation, we calculate the scattering matrix of the two-body problem for a system that satisfies the Yang-Baxter Equation and obtain exchange relations that are identical to those obtained using the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the XXX-1/2 spin chain model. Finally, we calculate the scattering matrix for a two-body problem interacting with a delta potential and show that this is the same as what we derived using the Coordinate Bethe Ansatz.

Exact solutions forA-DTemperley - Lieb models

R Köberle, A Lima-Santos

We solve for the spectrum of quantum spin chains based on representations of the Temperley - Lieb algebra associated with the quantum groups for and . We employ a generalization of the coordinate Bethe ansatz developed previously for the deformed biquadratic spin-one chain. As expected, all of these models have equivalent spectra, i.e. they differ only in the degeneracy of their eigenvalues. This is true for finite length and open boundary conditions. For periodic boundary conditions the spectra of the lower-dimensional representations are contained entirely in the higher-dimensional ones. The Bethe states are highest-weight states of the quantum group, except in certain cases where the states have energy zero.

Analytical Bethe Ansatz for quantum-algebra-invariant spin chains

Luca Mezincescu, Rafael I. Nepomechie

We have recently constructed a large class of open quantum spin chains which have quantum-algebra symmetry and which are integrable. We show here that these models can be exactly solved using a generalization of the analytical Bethe Ansatz (BA) method. In particular, we determine in this way the spectrum of the transfer matrices of the Uq[su(2)]-invariant spin chains associated with A1(1) and A2(2) in the fundamental representation. The quantum-algebra invariance of these models plays an essential role in obtaining these results. The BA equations for these open chains are “doubled” with respect to the BA equations for the corresponding closed chains.
