Quantum Hamiltonian theory of an electro-optical modulator

Abstract

A Quantum Hamiltonian formalism is proposed for the description of an electro-optical modulator based on the linear Pockels effect. Optical photons interact with photons of a microwave mode in a combined high- Q cavity made of a LiNbO 3 crystal. The microwave photons occupy a coherent state, while optical photons have an arbitrary density matrix. The spectrum of a photodetected modulated signal is analyzed as a function of the frequency of a tunable optical filter. Numerical estimates are obtained, and quantum effects in the spectrum, such as the red shift of the central frequency and sidebands, the possibility of modulation of the optical signal by the microwave field vacuum, and the asymmetry of the intensity of the spectral sidebands, are discussed.

Algebraic approach to electro-optic modulation of light: exactly solvable multimode quantum model

George P. Miroshnichenko, Alexei D. Kiselev, Alexander Trifanov +1 more

We theoretically study electro-optic light modulation based on a quantum model where the linear electro-optic effect and the externally applied microwave field result in the interaction between optical cavity modes. The model assumes that the number of interacting modes is finite, and effects of the mode overlapping coefficient on the strength of the intermode interaction can be taken into account through dependence of the coupling coefficient on the mode characteristics. We show that, under certain conditions, the model is exactly solvable and can be analyzed using the technique of the Jordan mappings for the su(2) Lie algebra. Analytical results are applied to study effects of light modulation on the frequency dependence of the photon counting rate. In contrast to the limiting case of an infinitely large number of interacting modes, when the number of interacting modes is finite, the sideband intensities reveal strongly nonmonotonic behavior supplemented with asymmetry of the intensity distribution provided the pumped mode is not central. We also analyze different regimes of two-modulator transmission and establish the conditions of validity of the semiclassical approximation by applying the methods of polynomially deformed Lie algebras for analysis of the model with quantized microwave field.

Cavity quantum electro-optics. II. Input-output relations between traveling optical and microwave fields

Mankei Tsang

In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. A 81, 063837 (2010)], I proposed a quantum model of the cavity electro-optic modulator, which can coherently couple an optical cavity mode to a microwave resonator mode and enable quantum operations on the two modes, including laser cooling of the microwave resonator, electro-optic entanglement, and backaction-evading optical measurement of a microwave quadrature. In this sequel, I focus on the quantum input-output relations between traveling optical and microwave fields coupled to the cavity electro-optic modulator. With red-sideband optical pumping, the relations are shown to resemble those of a beam splitter for the traveling fields, so that in the ideal case of zero parasitic loss and critical coupling, microwave photons can be coherently up converted to ``flying'' optical photons with unit efficiency, and vice versa. With blue-sideband pumping, the modulator acts as a nondegenerate parametric amplifier, which can generate two-mode squeezing and hybrid entangled photon pairs at optical and microwave frequencies. These fundamental operations provide a potential bridge between circuit quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics.

Algebraic theory of an electro-optic modulator

George P. Miroshnichenko, Artur V. Gleim

Hamiltonian of a parametric process describing the interaction of a finite number of optical cavity modes, with the microwave field is proposed. Three-boson interaction is due to electro-optical effect. Analysis of the model is based on the algebraic properties of multimode field operators who, under certain assumptions, are su (2) algebra generators. The features of the transformation of the quantum states of signal photons in the electro-optical modulator are investigated. The limit on the number of interacting modes from the proposed (restricted) model to the traditionally used (unrestricted) model of electro-optical modulator is investigated.

Quantum model for traveling-wave electro-optical phase modulator

D. B. Horoshko, M. M. Eskandary, S. Ya. Kilin

We develop a quantum model of a traveling-wave electro-optical phase modulator by considering a parametric interaction of the optical and radiofrequency waves in the modulator medium by means of the electro-optic effect. The model includes a possible dispersion of the modulator medium in the optical domain. In the case of negligible dispersion, we derive a simple analytic expression for the evolution operator of the optical field, which has been proposed previously in the literature on the basis of an analogy to classical field transformation. We study by means of a perturbative approach the influence of small dispersion on the field evolution operator and formulate conditions of negligibility of modulator dispersion. We demonstrate the signature of dispersion in phase modulation: breaking the symmetry of sidebands with respect to the mean photon number. We obtain the law of transformation of a multimode coherent state by a phase modulator, which is important for understanding the structure of signal states in quantum cryptographic schemes utilizing phase modulation of coherent optical beams.

Quantum analysis of a traveling-wave electro-optic phase modulator in the presence of the phase noise from a radio frequency oscillator and a laser

Rana Pratap, Harishankar Ramachandran

Quantum analysis has been done for the traveling-wave (TW) electro-optic phase modulator in the presence of the phase noise of a radio frequency (RF) oscillator and a laser source, in which the Hamiltonian for an active section of the phase modulator system is derived. The effect of RF phase noise from the oscillator and a phase velocity mismatch (PVM) between optical photons and the RF field are included in the Hamiltonian. The time evolution of the field operator of the laser in the TW electro-optic phase modulator is derived by the Heisenberg equation of motion. The action of a TW electro-optic phase modulator in the presence of the two distinct weak noises—classical phase noise because of RF and quantum phase noise caused by a laser—has been evaluated and explained in terms of the second-order temporal correlation function and power spectrum. The power spectrum has been written as a function of the semiconductor laser linewidth, an enhancement factor in the laser linewidth, and the RF oscillator linewidth. The results are applied to analyze the basic model of a frequency-coded quantum key distribution (FC-QKD) system. The quantum bit error rate (QBER), the first-order optical intensity correlation function, and the spectrum of intensity fluctuation have been calculated for the partially coherent regime to evaluate the performance of the FC-QKD system.

Efficient microwave to optical photon conversion: an electro-optical realization

Alfredo Rueda, Florian Sedlmeir, Michele C. Collodo +9 more

Linking classical microwave electrical circuits to the optical telecommunication band is at the core of modern communication. Future quantum information networks will require coherent microwave-to-optical conversion to link electronic quantum processors and memories via low-loss optical telecommunication networks. Efficient conversion can be achieved with electro-optical modulators operating at the single microwave photon level. In the standard electro-optic modulation scheme this is impossible because both, up- and downconverted, sidebands are necessarily present. Here we demonstrate true single sideband up- or downconversion in a triply resonant whispering gallery mode resonator by explicitly addressing modes with asymmetric free spectral range. Compared to previous experiments, we show a three orders of magnitude improvement of the electro-optical conversion efficiency reaching 0.1% photon number conversion for a 10GHz microwave tone at 0.42mW of optical pump power. The presented scheme is fully compatible with existing superconducting 3D circuit quantum electrodynamics technology and can be used for non-classical state conversion and communication. Our conversion bandwidth is larger than 1MHz and not fundamentally limited.
