Quantum mechanical study of a generic quadratically coupled optomechanical system

Hongyan Shi, Mishkatul Bhattacharya

Typical optomechanical systems involving optical cavities and mechanical oscillators rely on a coupling that varies linearly with the oscillator displacement. However, recently a coupling varying instead as the square of the mechanical displacement has been realized, presenting new possibilities for nondemolition measurements and mechanical squeezing. In this article we present a quantum mechanical study of a generic quadratic-coupling optomechanical Hamiltonian. First, neglecting dissipation, we provide analytical results for the dressed states, spectrum, phonon statistics and entanglement. Subsequently, accounting for dissipation, we supply a numerical treatment using a master equation approach. We expect our results to be of use to optomechanical spectroscopy, state transfer, wave-function engineering, and entanglement generation.

Quantum Statistical Mechanics. IV. Non-Equilibrium Probability Operator and Stochastic, Dissipative Schrodinger Equation

Phil Attard

The probability operator for a generic non-equilibrium quantum system is derived. The corresponding stochastic, dissipative Schrödinger equation is also given. The dissipative and stochastic propagators are linked by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem that is derived from the unitary condition on the time propagator. The dissipative propagator is derived from thermodynamic force and entropy fluctuation operators that are in general non-linear.

On formation of long-living states

Boris I. Ivlev

The motion of a particle in a potential well is studied when the particle is attached to an infinite elastic string. This is generic with the problem of dissipative quantum mechanics investigated by Caldeira and Leggett (Ann. Phys. 149, 374 (1983). doi: 10.1016/0003-4916(83)90202-6 ). Besides the dissipative motion there is another scenario of interaction of the string with the particle attached. Stationary particle–string states exist with string deformations accompanying the particle. This is like polaronic states in solids. Our polaronic states in the well are non-decaying and have a continuous energy spectrum. These states may have a link to quantum electrodynamics.
