Absorptive Optical Bistability. The Case of Fabry‐Perot

Abstract

Abstract Stationary Maxwell‐Bloch equations describing saturable‐absorber‐filled Fabry‐Perot resonators are studied by the causal diagram method to bring into prominence the role of interrelations among the factors involved. The representative diagram contains three feedback loops. It is shown that cooperation of all these loops is required to produce conditions necessary for optical bistability. Similar behaviour is encountered in the case of two‐sections semiconductor injection laser. General implications are suggested.

Optical bistability in a laser containing a saturable absorber

Smail Djabi, H. Boudoukha, M. Djabi

In this work, the theory of optical bistability for the homogeneously broadening of a nonlinear absorber inside Fabry-Perot interferometer is treated. The theoretical influence of the resonator losses on the optical bistability is examined mainly in the cases for which losses depend on both the mode frequency and the density of photons. On the basis of the Rate Equation Approach (REA), we analytically and numerically solved this type of equation for stationary case.

Instabilities for absorptive optical bistability in a nonideal Fabry-Pérot cavity

A. J. van Wonderen, L.G. Suttorp

Instabilities are predicted for absorptive optical bistability in a nonideal Fabry-P\'erot cavity on the basis of Maxwell-Bloch theory. We show that the stability problem of the Maxwell-Bloch equations can be formulated in terms of a Riccati differential equation with boundary conditions. We have integrated this equation numerically. Our results crucially depend on the value of the transmission coefficient of the mirrors. For finite values of this quantity we find that the nearest side mode is responsible for two disconnected instability domains in the plane spanned by the output intensity and the medium response time. One of these domains can generate instabilities in the upper and the lower branch of the steady-state curve if the cooperation parameter is sufficiently large. Higher side modes can give rise to positive-slope instabilities as well. From our findings it can be understood why a recent experimental search for instabilities in absorptive optical bistability has led to a negative result. We finally demonstrate that the instability spectra of a Fabry-P\'erot cavity and a so-called equivalent ring cavity differ considerably.

Optical bistability of Fabry-Perot LSA with inhomogeneous broadening

Dinh Van Hoang, Phung Quoc Bao

The optical bistability (OB) behavior of single-mode Fabry- Perot lasers containing saturable absorber (LSA) is presented on the basis of the rate equations with allowance for spontaneous emission and spatial hole-burning. Special attention is paid to the case of dominant inhomogeneous broadening in both Lorentzian and Gaussian models. The OB occurrence conditions are clearly displayed in phase diagrams. The influence of the main LSA parameters on OB characteristics as well as on OB curves' stability are investigated in detail. Some practical suggestions for optimizing the bistable operation in LSA are also given.

ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN LASER WITH SATURABLE ABSORBER

Smail Djabi, H. Boudoukha, Saïd Meguellati

In this paper, we develop a theoretical model that accurately describes the nonlinear phenomenon of optical bistability in Fabry-Perot laser containing a saturable absorber "LSA". We present an analytical model for optical bistability in a LSA. The physics of optical bistability in a classical optical resonant system such as Fabry-Perot etalon has been well-established, and can be described by simple analytical models. The photon intensities were determined as a function of the pumping rate of the active medium, and we analyzed the linear stability of the stationary solutions obtained.

Phonon effects on optical bistability in a two-photon resonant absorber

Isabel Gonzalo, M. A. Antón, Jose L. Escudero

Single beam two-photon optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot cavity is analyzed taking into account phonon effects. The Maxwell-Bloch equations of the system are further coupled by a term that is dependent on the electron-phonon interaction. It is shown that such an interaction can lead to a new type of optical bistability which competes with the ordinary absorptive one.>

Numerical Studies of Optical Bistability of Absorptive Type

Eliška Jurisová, Jarmila Müllerová

Theoretical analysis is presented to search for the purely absorptive optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with a saturable absorber. A simple model of singlet absorption is used on numerically solving the relationships between the input and output light fields. The proposed model corresponds well to organic compounds considered as novel optical materials with third-order optical nonlinearities. The effects of saturable absorber parameters on the output light characteristics are studied and purely absorptive optical bistabilities are shown numerically to search for bistable behaviour. The simulated results are indications for promising applications in optical switches for all-optical communication networks.
