Abstract

We derive conditions for full spatio-temporal factorability in non-collinear type-I spontaneous parametric downconversion. We show that fulfilment of these conditions leads to a higher single-mode fiber-coupled brightness, compared to sources rendered factorable through spectral filtering.

Design of bright, fiber-coupled and fully factorable photon pair sources

Luis Edgar Vicent, Alfred B. U’Ren, Radhika Rangarajan +4 more

From quantum computation to quantum key distribution, many quantum-enhanced applications rely on the ability to generate pure single photons. Even though the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) is widely used as the basis for photon-pair sources, the conditions for pure heralded single-photon generation, taking into account both spectral and spatial degrees of freedom, have not been fully described. We present an analysis of the spatio-temporal correlations present in photon pairs produced by type-I, non-collinear SPDC. We derive a set of conditions for full factorability in all degrees of freedom—required for the heralding of pure single photons—between the signal and idler modes. In this paper, we consider several possible approaches for the design of bright, fiber-coupled and factorable photon-pair sources. We show through numerical simulations of the exact equations that sources based on: (i) the suppression of spatio-temporal entanglement according to our derived conditions and (ii) a tightly focused pump beam together with optimized fiber-collection modes and spectral filtering of the signal and idler photon pairs, lead to a source brightness of the same order of magnitude. Likewise, we find that both of these sources lead to a drastically higher factorable photon-pair flux, compared to an unengineered source.

Optimal photon-pair single-mode coupling in narrow-band spontaneous parametric downconversion with arbitrary pump profile

Jean-Loup Smirr, Matthieu Deconinck, Robert Frey +3 more

A theoretical investigation of the performance of single-mode coupled spontaneous parametric downconversion sources is proposed, which only requires very few assumptions of practical interest: quasi-degenerate collinear generation and narrow bandwidth obtained through spectral filtering. Other assumptions, such as pump-beam spatial and temporal envelopes, target single-mode profile and size, and nonlinear susceptibility distribution, are only taken into account in the final step of the computation, thus making the theory general and flexible. Figures of merit for performance include absolute coupled brightness and conditional coupling efficiency. Their optimization is investigated using functions that only depend on dimensionless parameters, so that the results provide the best experimental configuration for a whole range of design choices (e.g., crystal length, pump power, etc.). A particular application of the theory is validated by an experimental optimization obtained under compatible assumptions. A comparison with other works and proposals for numerically implementing the theory under less stringent assumptions is also provided.

Conditional preparation of single photons using parametric downconversion: a recipe for purity

Peter J. Mosley, Jeff S. Lundeen, Brian J. Smith +1 more

In an experiment reported recently (Mosley et al 2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 133601), we demonstrated that, through group velocity matched parametric downconversion, heralded single photons can be generated in pure quantum states without spectral filtering. The technique relies on factorable photon pair production, initially developed theoretically in the strict collinear regime; focusing—required in any experimental implementation—can ruin this factorability. Here, we present the numerical model used to design our single photon sources and minimize spectral correlations in the light of such experimental considerations. Furthermore, we show that the results of our model are in good agreement with measurements made on the photon pairs and give a detailed description of the exact requirements for constructing this type of source.

Engineering an ideal indistinguishable photon-pair source for optical quantum information processing

Radhika Rangarajan, Luis Edgar Vicent, Alfred B. U’Ren +1 more

The eventual success of optical quantum information (QI) processing depends critically on the available technologies. Photons produced via the nonlinear process of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) have now been used in a vast array of experiments in optical quantum computing and long-distance quantum communication. However, almost no source to date has been fully optimized. Here, we describe our progress in engineering an ideal photon-pair source for optical quantum information processing – polarization-entangled photons made indistinguishable by engineering spatio-spectral unentanglement at the source. We present solutions for several key challenges encountered in the development of the indistinguishable source. We expect such a source to directly translate into significantly enhanced QI protocols with higher rates, fidelities and efficiencies.

Engineering of near-IR photon pairs to be factorable in space-time and entangled in polarization

Kevin Zielnicki, Karina Garay-Palmett, Radhika Dirks +2 more

We present a source of near-infrared photon pairs based on the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC), for which the joint signal-idler quantum state is designed to be factorable in the frequency-time and in the transverse position-momentum degrees of freedom. Our technique is based on the use of a broadband pump and vector group velocity matching between the pump, signal, and idler waves. We show experimentally that a source based on this technique can be configured for the generation of: i) pure heralded single photons, and ii) polarization-entangled photon pairs which are free from spectral correlations, in both cases without resorting to spectral filtering. While critical for many applications in optical quantum information processing, such a source has not previously been demonstrated.

Bright filter-free source of indistinguishable photon pairs

Florian Wolfgramm, X. Xing, Alessandro Ceré +3 more

We demonstrate a high-brightness source of pairs of indistinguishable photons based on a type-II phase-matched doubly-resonant optical parametric oscillator operated far below threshold. The cavityenhanced down-conversion output of a PPKTP crystal is coupled into two single-mode fibers with a mode coupling efficiency of 58%. The high degree of indistinguishability between the photons of a pair is demonstrated by a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility of higher than 90% without any filtering at an instantaneous coincidence rate of 450,000 pairs/s per mW of pump power per nm of down-conversion bandwidth. For the degenerate spectral mode with a linewidth of 7 MHz at 795 nm a rate of 70 pairs/(s mW MHz) is estimated, increasing the spectral brightness for indistinguishable photons by two orders of magnitude compared to similar previous sources.
