Abstract

Optical bistable switching and optical triode operation have been carried out using an optical directional coupler switch fabricated by Ti diffusion into LiNbO3at the 1.15 μm wavelength. The on/off ratio in conventional bistable switching was 10 dB and that in complementary bistable switching was 13 dB. Amplification gain in triode operation controlled by laser diode was 4.8 dB. Complementary operation was found to reduce feedback gain and to improve the on/off ratio in optical bistable switching.

Optically controlled two channel integrated-optical switch

An integrated optical bistable device based on a waveguide directional coupler switch is demonstrated. The device has four optical ports, and the power incident on the two input ports exists from two distinct output ports so that all-optical data processing or remote optical switching can be performed. On/off ratios as high as 12 dB have been observed. A switching time of\sim300 \mus and switching energy of ∼3 pJ have been achieved.

Remotely controlled integrated directional coupler switch

A. Schnapper, Michel R. Papuchon, C. Puech

In this paper experimental results concerning the remote control of a bistable directional coupler switch are reported. It is shown that the output light from the coupler can be switched from one channel to the other via switching information contained in the incident light itself. The principle of operation of the device is demonstrated using a coupler fabricated in an LiNbO3substrate. A switching time of the order of 100 μs has been obtained, limited only by the electronic feedback loop used in the experiment.

Complementary Optical Bistable Operation with Integration of Two Directional Couplers on LiNbO3 Crystal

Ching-Ting Lee, How-Chiang Lee, Hsin-Hung Lai Hsin-Hung Lai +1 more

Integrated optical bistable circuits consisting of two parallel reversed-Δβ-directional couplers interconnected by single-mode waveguides were fabricated on a single LiNbO3 crystal. Superior performances of the complementary and consistent types of hysteresis curves are demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Parallel optical signal processes of different logic gate combinations are obtained.

Optical bistability using a directional coupler and a detector monolithically integrated in GaAs

Alain Carenco, L. Menigaux

An electro-optic directional coupler has been integrated on the same GaAs chip with a proton-implanted detector located in one of the output rib waveguide channels. The association of this monolithic device with an external electrical amplifier has allowed optical bistable operation to be demonstrated at 1.06 μm. With an amplifier gain equal to unity, the bistable device switches in about 1 μs, the optical switching energy being less than 1 nJ.

Triode operation of an intrinsic optical bistable device

Noriaki Tsukada, Takashi Nakayama

This paper points out new effects that can occur In triode operation of an optical bistable device. Triode operation in the optical gating of a signal beam by a control beam has been demonstrated using a GaAs-GaAlAs trilayer sandwich.1 However, the theoretical analysis for the triode operation has not yet been reported. We show theoretically that the properties of the medium and, hence, the transmission of the signal beam (ωS) through a Fabry-Perot cavity are strongly modified by a control beam (ωc) which changes the dielectric susceptibility of the intracavity medium. Amplification of the signal beam due to the three-photon effect2 and multistability attributed to the saturation of the multiphoton transition processes3,4 are predicted.
