Pulsating States for Quantal Harmonic Oscillator

I. Fujiwara, K. Miyoshi

Abstract

In contrast to its coherent state, the quantal harmonic oscillator allows the existence of another state of completely nonclassical character. It is represented by a Gaussian wave packet, of which the center remains at rest and the width varies sinusoidally with time. Thus we may term it pulsating state.

Shape-invariant wave packets for three-dimensional harmonic oscillators

Frans Arickx, J. Broeckhove, Piet Van Leuven

It is shown that for a three-dimensional harmonic oscillator there exist families of Gaussian wave packets that retain their shape during the time evolution, i.e., the wave packet rotates around its center without spreading or deforming. This generalizes the concept of coherent vibrational motion to coherent rotational motion.

A neglected aspect of the pulsating Gaussian wave packet

S. Waldenstrøm, Kalbe Razi Naqvi

The dissipation of a highly localized harmonic oscillator wave packet of Gaussian form and its subsequent revival (and the revival of wave packets in an infinite square well) are discussed; these examples are evocative of the echoes encountered in many domains of physics.

Harmonic Oscillator Wave Functions

I. R. Senitzky

A harmonic oscillator wave packet which oscillates sinusoidally without change in shape has been described by Schr\"odinger and others. It is shown in the present note that there are an infinite number of such wave packets---of which the above is a special one-having the shapes of the various eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. The relation of these wave packets to the classical oscillator is discussed.

Coherent states for the nonlinear harmonic oscillator

Subir Ghosh

Wave packets for the quantum nonlinear oscillator are considered in the generalized coherent state framework. To first order in the nonlinearity parameter the coherent state behaves very similar to its classical counterpart. The position expectation value oscillates in a simple harmonic manner. The energy-momentum uncertainty relation is time independent as in a harmonic oscillator. Various features (such as the squeezed state nature) of the coherent state have been discussed.

Harmonic oscillator with strongly pulsating mass

R. K. Colegrave, M. Sebawe Abdalla

An exact solution is presented for the problem of a harmonic oscillator of frequency ω 0 and mass varying with time according to M = M O cos 2 νt. The solution is closely related to that of an oscillator of constant mass M O and frequency (ω O 2 + ν 2 ) 1/2 . Pseudostationary and quasicoherent states are discussed. Applications in quantum optics are foreseen.
