Resonant coherent hyper-Raman scattering (CHRS). II. A theory on the general relationship between CHRS and coherent Raman scattering (CRS) processes

Minhaeng Cho

A theoretical description of the resonant coherent hyper-Raman scattering for an arbitrary system–bath interaction is presented. Particularly the relationship between the coherent hyper-Raman scattering (CHRS) and coherent Raman scattering (CRS) signals is established without alluding to any specific model of optical broadening. The permanent dipole moment difference between the excited and ground states of a given chromophore is shown to be proportional to the ratio of the CHRS to CRS signals, and it is proved that this result is valid regardless of the model for the chromophore–bath interaction.

The Behavior of CARS in Anti-Stokes Raman Converters Operating at Exact Raman Resonance

Nathalie Vermeulen, Christof Debaes A, Hugo Thienpont A

In this paper, we present a model that fully describes the quasi-stationary behavior of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) in an anti-Stokes Raman converter operating at exact Raman resonance. We demonstrate that the CARS mechanism actually comprises two opposite and competing interactions, which respectively create and annihilate phonons in the Raman medium. Furthermore, we show that both the phase mismatch of the CARS four-wave mixing process and the level of pump depletion determine which of these two interactions takes place along the converter path length. In addition, we demonstrate that our CARS model is fully in line with seemingly contradictory findings in Raman conversion experiments. Finally, we discuss the fundamental differences between our CARS interpretation and the CARS models presented earlier.

Theory of stimulated Raman scattering in a dispersive medium

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V. K. Orlov

An analysis is made of the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave in stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) in a dispersive medium for different models of wide-band pump radiation. An accurate solution of the STRS equations is obtained for pump radiation having a quadratically time-modulated phase. It is shown that for pump radiation for which the width of the instantaneous frequency spectrum is much less than the Raman scattering line width, the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave differ substantially from those predicted by statistical STRS theory. Solutions of STRS equations in a dispersive medium are found for a model of temporally periodic pump radiation having a high intermode beat frequency.
