COHERENT STATES WITHOUT GROUPS: QUANTIZATION ON NONHOMOGENEOUS MANIFOLDS

John R. Klauder

Abstract

A wide class of single-variable holomorphic representation spaces are constructed that are associated with very general sets of coherent states defined without the use of transitively acting groups. These representations and states are used to define coherent-state path integrals involving phase-space manifolds having one Killing vector but a quite general curvature otherwise.

Path Integrals on Group Manifolds: The Representation Independent Propagator for General Lie Groups

Wolfgang A. Tomé

The quantization of physical systems moving on group and symmetric spaces has been an area of active research over the past three decades. This book shows that it is possible to introduce a representation-independent propagator for a real, separable, connected and simply connected Lie group with irreducible, square-integrable representations. For a given set of kinematical variables this propagator is a single generalized function independent of any particular choice of fiducial vector and the irreducible representations of the Lie group generated by these kinematical variables, which nonetheless correctly propagates each element of a continuous representation based on the coherent states associated with these kinematical variables.Furthermore, the book shows that it is possible to construct regularized lattice phase space path integrals for a real, separable, connected and simply connected Lie group with irreducible, square-integrable representations, and although the configuration space is in general a multidimensional curved manifold, it is shown that the resulting lattice phase space path integral has the form of a lattice phase space path integral on a multidimensional flat manifold. Hence, a novel and extremely natural phase space path integral quantization is obtained for general physical systems whose kinematical variables are the generators of a connected and simply connected Lie group. This novel phase space path integral quantization is (a) exact, (b) more general than, and (c) free from the limitations of the previously considered path integral quantizations of free physical systems moving on group manifolds. To illustrate the general theory, a representation-independent propagator is explicitly constructed for SU(2) and the affine group

Coherent states for n-dimensional Euclidean groups E(n) and their application

Christopher John Isham, John R. Klauder

The n-dimensional Euclidean group—the group of rotations and translations of Rn —is the natural canonical group for quantizing a system whose configuration space is the sphere Sn−1, n≥2. Since every unitary irreducible representation of E(n) is nonsquare integrable it follows that coherent states involving the whole group do not exist for such representations. Instead, coherent states are defined based on unitary, reducible representations of the group, and it will be shown that, with such states, quantum dynamics on the sphere admits a path-integral representation involving novel first-order classical actions defined on E(n) as well as integrations over the entire group manifold at each time slice. Irreducibility of the quantization is achieved through a final limiting process.

COHERENT STATES AND THEIR GENERALIZATIONS: A MATHEMATICAL OVERVIEW

S. Twareque Ali, Jean-Pierre Antoine, Jean‐Pierre Gazeau +1 more

We present a survey of the theory of coherent states (CS) and some of their generalizations, with emphasis on the mathematical structure, rather than on physical applications. Starting from the standard theory of CS over Lie groups, we develop a general formalism, in which CS are associated to group representations which are square integrable over a homogeneous space. A further step allows us to dispense with the group context altogether, and thus obtain the so-called reproducing triples and continuous frames introduced in some earlier work. We discuss in detail a number of concrete examples, namely semisimple Lie groups, the relativity groups and various types of wavelets. Finally we turn to some physical applications, centering on quantum measurement and the quantization/dequantization problem, that is, the transition from the classical to the quantum level and vice versa.

A NOTE ON THE TIME EVOLUTION OF GENERALIZED COHERENT STATES

MICHAEL STONE

I consider the time evolution of generalized coherent states based on non-standard fiducial vectors, and show that only for a restricted class of such vectors does the associated classical motion determine the quantum evolution of the states. I discuss some consequences of this for path integral representations.

Path integral quantisation and coherent states

Ioannis Bakas, H. La Roche

Generalised coherent states are used in the quantum mechanical study of physical systems with homogeneous phase spaces, for which there is a group theoretical approach to quantisation. New sets of coherent states are introduced based on dynamical subalgebras and also with fiducial vectors in the rigged Hilbert space. The path integral expression for coherent state transition amplitudes is examined from a group theoretical point of view.

Coherent states: Theory and some applications

Wei-Min Zhang, D.H. Feng, Robert Gilmore

In this review, a general algorithm for constructing coherent states of dynamical groups for a given quantum physical system is presented. The result is that, for a given dynamical group, the coherent states are isomorphic to a coset space of group geometrical space. Thus the topological and algebraic structure of the coherent states as well as the associated dynamical system can be extensively discussed. In addition, a quantum-mechanical phase-space representation is constructed via the coherent-state theory. Several useful methods for employing the coherent states to study the physical phenomena of quantum-dynamic systems, such as the path integral, variational principle, classical limit, and thermodynamic limit of quantum mechanics, are described.
