Abstract

The spatiotemporal dynamics of a light pulse injected into a dense, resonant medium under near-dipole–dipole interaction conditions is considered. Two regimes for soliton formation are investigated numerically and analytically. The first one occurs if the pulses are much shorter than both relaxation times. In the second, the pulse duration falls between those of the relaxation times and may be regarded as an incoherent one. In the latter case there are conditions in which the dephasing process is suppressed by dipole–dipole interatomic interaction. Not only are one-soliton solutions found but also a powerful pulse splitting into separate solitons is revealed. The regions in which solitons are found have been estimated. The possibility of finding incoherent solitons has been analyzed, with group-velocity dispersion and diffraction of tilted pulses, which are shown to make soliton formation easier, taken into account.

Optical solitons in dense resonant media

Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, R. A. Vlasov, A. G. Cherstvyi

Exact single-soliton solutions of the modified system of Maxwell-Bloch equations, in which the dipole-dipole interactions of the atoms of a dense resonant medium are taken into account, are obtained. Two propagation regimes are analyzed: “coherent,” where the pulse duration is much shorter than both relaxation times ( T p ≪ T 1 , T 2 ), and “incoherent,” where the pulse duration falls between the relaxation times ( T 2 ≪ T p ≪ T 1 ). It is predicted, for the first time, that soliton propagation of an ultrashort pulse is possible in a dense resonant absorbing medium in an incoherent interaction regime. The differences between the amplitude and phase characteristics of the solitons considered and the corresponding characteristics of the solitons for McCall-Hahn self-induced transparency are noted.

Solitons and transients in media with near dipole-dipole interaction

Oleg Kh Khasanov, Русецкий Григорий Александрович, Olga M. Fedotova +3 more

This paper studies soliton regimes of light pulse propagation and transient processes in optically dense media with the near dipole-dipole interaction. It is shown that such an interaction permits the soliton propagation to be realized while the pulse duration is not only less than both irreversible relaxation times T/sub 1/ and T/sub 2/ but also when it falls between T/sub 2/ /spl Lt/ /spl tau//sub p/ /spl Lt/ T/sub 1/.

EXPLORING SOLITON AND SIMILARITON FORMATION IN RESONANT OPTICAL MEDIA

Soodeh Haghgoo

Investigating the behavior of an atom in response to the applied electric field when the latter frequency is in resonance with the natural frequency of the atom is an interesting subject. Near resonance, some of the most interesting optical phenomena such as dispersion, and absorption are more pronounced. Moreover, considering resonant and near resonant interaction of light with two-level atoms, uncovers fascinating physical phenomena such as area theorem and self-induced transparency describing stable pulse propagation regimes in which the pulses maintain their identity. Existence of these optical structures in on-resonance optical media has not been investigated in detail. In this thesis, the on-resonance interaction of optical field with atoms is considered and the formation of several novel self-similar and kink waves in linear and nonlinear resonant media is discovered and theoretically explored. First, self-similar pulse formation in homogeneous broadened linear amplifiers in a vicinity of an optical resonance is analyzed. It is demonstrated that the self-similar pulses serve as universal asymptotics of any near resonance short pulses propagating in coherent linear amplifiers. Second, ultrashort self-similar pulse propagation in coherent linear absorbers near optical resonance is investigated. Third, existence of self-similar optical waves with kink structure in resonant optical systems is discovered. Fourth, it is found that self-induced transparency quadratic solitons are realizable in the media with quadratic optical nonlinearities, doped with resonant impurities. Finally, stable spatial similaritons supported by homogeneous conservative optical media with quintic nonlinearities are explored. To experimentally realize the presented results, physical models are presented for all systems under consideration. The stability of the proposed near resonance optical systems is demonstrated through a series of numerical case studies.

Propagation of a self-induced transparency pulse in a spatially dispersive medium

Yu. G. Gladush, A. M. Kamchatnov

Propagation of a self-induced transparency pulse in spatially dispersive media is analyzed. A generalized model of two-level systems allowing for excitonic energy transfer is proposed. Periodic and soliton solutions to the governing equations are found. Estimates show that the spatial dispersion of a pulse propagating in a slow-light medium can be substantially enhanced and become important in the case of resonant transition and sufficiently long pulse duration.

Self-induced transparency in a resonance medium with the dipole-dipole interaction

Mikhail B. Belonenko, V. V. Kabakov

Propagation of a pulse of self-induced transparency in a resonance medium is discussed for the case when it is necessary to take into account the direct electric dipole-dipole interaction between atoms. An equation for the envelope of a wave packet—the sine-Gordon equation—is obtained for the case of durations short compared to ω 0 −1 (ω0 is the transition frequency). The dependence of the velocity and the amplitude of the soliton on the magnitude of the dipole-dipole interaction of atoms is examined in the adiabatic approximation.

Self-induced transparency in self-chirped media

Carlos R. Stroud, C. M. Bowden, L. Allen

Resonant absorbing media having many atoms within a cubic resonance wavelength can exhibit large frequency chirps in pulse propagation due to dipole-dipole interactions among the atoms. Analytic solutions are obtained for invariant pulse propagation in such a medium consisting of interacting two-level atoms. Departures from the McCall-Hahn results include nonhyperbolic secant pulse shapes and different than 2π-area pulses. In addition, the excitation of the medium is comparatively suppressed for the same group velocity. The results are interpreted to suggest new experiments.
