Abstract

Based on the semiclassical quantum theory, we study the dynamical behaviors of Bose-Einstein condensate in an asymmetric Josephson junction. It is shown that the Josephson effect appears in the system when the ratio χ of the difference of two ground state energies to the interaction energies is zero. When χ≠0, the dynamical behavior of the system shows both the macroscopic quantum tunneling and the macroscopic quantum localization.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation in an asymmetric double-well potential

Yao-Jun Ying, Haibin Li

Josephson effect of Bose-Einstein condensate in double-well potential is an obvious manifestation of macroscopic quantum coherence. Most of researches focus on the symmetric double-well potential. In this work, we investigate the dynamic of Bose-Einstein condensates in an asymmetric double-well potential by using two-mode theory and computer simulation. In the absence of the interaction between atoms, the dynamic equation of condensate can be solved analytically. The amplitude as a function of energy difference of two wells is obtained. We can find that the change of energy difference will lead to the different dynamic behaviors of condensate. If the energy difference is relatively large, the condensate will primarily occupy the well that is occupied more than the other well at the beginning time. It is interesting that such a trap phenomenon is not dependent on the position of the high energy potential well nor the position of low energy potential well. If the energy difference becomes small, the tunneling and oscillation of condensate will be enhanced. When the interaction between atoms is present, our numerical calculations show that as the nonlinear interaction increases, the dynamic behavior of condensate exhibits different characteristics, such as trapping in a well, enhancing the tunneling and oscillation between two wells, and enhancing the trapping in a well at large nonlinear interaction, which is similar to the dynamic change caused by the energy difference in the case of ideal condensate. That is to say, on the one hand, the nonlinear interaction can lead to the trap of condensate as well as the dynamic trap to happen in symmetric double-well potential. On the other hand, the nonlinearity can promote the tunneling of condensate, counteracting the effect of the asymmetry of potential. And, this counteracting effect is related to the difference in energy between asymmetric potential wells. To understand the underlying mechanism, the full dynamic behavior of two-mode model is illustrated and the dynamic transition can be seen clearly. Combining the results obtained with and without interaction, regarding nonlinear interaction as effective potential provides a clear way to explain dynamic transition of condensate in an asymmetric double-well potential. In addition, we also perform the numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and the results are consistent with the conclusions obtained by using the two-mode theory.

Dissipative dynamics of the Josephson effect in binary Bose-Einstein-condensed mixtures

S. N. Burmistrov

The dissipative dynamics of a pointlike Josephson junction in binary Bose-Einstein-condensed mixtures is analyzed within the framework of the model of a tunneling Hamiltonian. The transmission of unlike particles across a junction is described by the different transmission amplitudes. The effective action that describes the dynamics of the phase differences across the junction for each of two condensed components is derived by employing the functional integration method. In the low-frequency limit the dynamics of a Josephson junction can be described by two coupled equations in terms of the potential energy and dissipative Rayleigh function using a mechanical analogy. The interplay between mass currents of each mixture component appears in the second-order term in the tunneling amplitudes due to the interspecies hybridizing interaction. The asymmetric case of the binary mixtures with different concentrations and order parameters is considered as well.

NONLINEAR TUNNELING INDUCED DYNAMIC-EFFECT OF BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATES IN AN EXTENDED JOSEPHSON-JUNCTION MODEL

Jing‐Yan Liu, J.-Q. Liang

In this paper, we investigated theoretically the dynamic effect induced by nonlinear tunneling of two weakly linked Bose–Einstein condensates in an extended boson Josephson-junction model, in which the two-body interaction is extended to neighboring lattice sites in strong interaction regime. As a consequence the dynamic properties compared with the usual Josephson-junction model are crucially modified by the atom-pair tunneling, which leads to the macroscopic quantum-states of coherent relative-phase between two condensates seen to be effective Schrödinger cat states. The relative-phase is controllable by system parameters and thus can be used to realize the qubit in quantum computation.

Tunneling Dynamics of Two—Species Bose—Einstein Condensates

We have studied the tunneling dynamics of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates. It is shown that the population difference and the Josephson-like tunneling current between the two condensates exhibit oscillation behaviors and there exists macroscopic quantum self-trapping, which strongly depends on the initial state, interatomic nonlinear self-interaction, interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the total number of atoms in the two condensates.

Quantum dynamics and macroscopic quantum tunnelling of two weakly coupled condensates

René John Kerkdyk, Subhasis Sinha

We study the quantum dynamics of a Bose Josephson junction(BJJ) made up of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. Apart from the usual ac Josephson oscillations, two different dynamical states of BJJ can be observed by tuning the inter-particle interaction strength, which are known as '$π$-oscillation' with relative phase $π$ between the condensates and 'macroscopic self-trapped' (MST) state with finite number imbalance. By choosing appropiate intial state we study above dynamical branches quantum mechanically and compare with classical dynamics. The stability region of the '$π$-oscillation' is separated from that of 'MST' state at a critical coupling strength. Also a significant change in the energy spectrum takes place above the critical coupling strength, and pairs of (quasi)-degenerate excited states appear. The original model of BJJ can be mapped on to a simple Hamiltonian describing quantum particle in an 'effective potential' with an effective Planck constant. Different dynamical states and degenerate excited states in the energy spectrum can be understood in this 'effective potential' approach. Also possible novel quantum phenomena like 'macroscopic quantum tunneling'(MQT) become evident from the simple picture of 'effective potential'. We study decay of metastable '$π$-oscillation' by MQT through potential barrier. The doubly degenerate excited states in the energy spectrum are associated with the classically degenerate MST states with equal and opposite number imbalance. We calculate the energy splitting between these quasi-degenerate excited states due to MQT of the condensate between classically degenerate MST states.
