Abstract

The thermodynamics and transport properties of strong-rail ladder systems are investigated by means of Green's function theory. It is shown that the magnetic behavior clearly manifests a typical antiferromagnetism with gapped or gapless low-lying excitations, which is in agreement with the experimental results. In addition, the temperature-field-induced phase diagram is explored, and we demonstrate a Luttinger liquid behavior in the window h(c) (marking the ending of the M=0 plateau)<h<h(s) (saturation magnetic field) within a narrow range of temperature. The spin liquid phase is uncovered for h<h(c) upon cooling down to zero temperature. It is also shown that the rung entanglement entropy is a good indicator for detecting the field-driven quantum criticality. Meanwhile, the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat, and the thermal (spin) Drude weights are calculated to characterize the plentiful quantum phases, in which the thermal insulating and conducting behaviors can be controlled by magnetic fields.

Note on the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz approach to the quantum phase diagram of the strong coupling ladder compounds

Murray T. Batchelor, Xi‐Wen Guan, Angela Foerster +1 more

We investigate the low-temperature phase diagram of the exactly solved su (4) two-leg spin ladder as a function of the rung coupling and magnetic field H by means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). In the absence of a magnetic field the model exhibits three quantum phases, while in the presence of a strong magnetic field there is no singlet ground state for ferromagnetic rung coupling. For antiferromagnetic rung coupling, there is a gapped phase in the regime H < H c1 , a fully polarized gapped phase for H > H c2 and a Luttinger liquid magnetic phase in the regime H c1 < H < H c2 . The critical behaviour derived using the TBA is consistent with the existing experimental, numerical and perturbative results for the strong coupling ladder compounds. This includes the spin excitation gap and the critical fields H c1 and H c2 , which are in excellent agreement with the experimental values for the known strong coupling ladder compounds (5IAP) 2 CuBr 4 ·2H 2 O, Cu 2 (C 5 H 12 N 2 ) 2 Cl 4 and (C 5 H 12 N) 2 CuBr 4 . In addition we predict the spin gap for the weak coupling compounds with , such as (VO) 2 P 2 O 7 , and also show that the gap opens for arbitrary .

Field-Induced Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid Phase of a Two-Leg Spin-1/2 Ladder with Strong Leg Interactions

Tao Hong, Y. H. Kim, Chisa Hotta +10 more

We study the magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped quantum phase that has no magnetic long-range order into a gapless phase in the spin-1/2 ladder compound bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocuprate (DIMPY). At temperatures below about 1 K, the specific heat in the gapless phase attains an asymptotic linear temperature dependence, characteristic of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Inelastic neutron scattering and the specific heat measurements in both phases are in good agreement with theoretical calculations, demonstrating that DIMPY is the first model material for an S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder in the strong-leg regime.

Integrable models and quantum spin ladders: comparison between theory and experiment for the strong coupling ladder compounds

Murray T. Batchelor, X. W. Guan, N. Oelkers +1 more

This article considers recent advances in the investigation of the thermal and magnetic properties of integrable spin ladder models and their applicability to the physics of strong coupling ladder compounds. For this class of compounds the rung coupling J ⊥ is much stronger than the coupling J ∥ along the ladder legs. The ground state properties of the integrable two-leg spin- and the mixed spin-() ladder models at zero temperature are analysed by means of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). Solving the TBA equations yields exact results for the critical fields and critical behaviour. The thermal and magnetic properties of the models are discussed in terms of the recently introduced High Temperature Expansion (HTE) method, which is reviewed in detail. In the strong coupling region the integrable spin- ladder model exhibits three quantum phases: (i) a gapped phase in the regime , (ii) a fully polarized phase for , and (iii) a Luttinger liquid magnetic phase in the regime H c1<H<H c2. The critical behaviour in the vicinity of the critical points H c1 and H c2 is of Pokrovsky-Talapov type. The temperature-dependent thermal and magnetic properties are directly evaluated from the exact free energy expression and compared to known experimental results for the strong coupling ladder compounds (5IAP)2CuBr4· 2H2O, Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4, (C5H12N)2CuBr4, BIP-BNO and [Cu2(C2\O 2)(C10H8N2)2)](NO3)2. Similar analysis of the mixed spin-() ladder model reveals a rich phase diagram, with a and a full saturation magnetization plateau within the strong antiferromagnetic rung coupling regime. For weak rung coupling, the fractional magnetization plateau is diminished and a new quantum phase transition occurs. The phase diagram can be directly deduced from the magnetization curve obtained from the exact result derived from the TBA and HTE. The results are applied to the mixed ferrimagnetic ladder compound PNNBNO. The thermodynamics of the spin-orbital model with different single-ion anisotropies is also discussed. For this model single-ion anisotropy can trigger different quantum phase transitions within the spin and orbital degrees of freedom, with magnetization plateaux arising from different spin and orbit Landé g-factors.

Field-induced quantum criticality in low-dimensional Heisenberg spin systems

Mohamed Moussadek Azzouz

We study the quantum critical behavior in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and two-leg Heisenberg ladder resulting from the application of an external magnetic field. In each of these systems a finite-temperature crossover line between two different ferromagnetic phases ends with a quantum critical point at zero temperature. Using the bond-mean-field theory, we calculate the field dependence of the magnetization and the mean-field spin bond parameters in both systems. For the Heisenberg chain, we recover the existing exact results and show in addition that the saturation of the zero-temperature magnetization at the field ${h}_{c}=2J$ is accompanied by a quantum phase transition, where the bond parameter vanishes. Here $J$ is the exchange coupling constant along the chain. For the two-leg ladder, we also recover the known results, like the two magnetization plateaus, and show that at the upper critical field, which corresponds to the appearance of the saturation magnetization plateau, the chain and rung spin bond parameters vanish. The identification of the order parameters that govern the field-induced quantum criticality in the systems we study here constitutes an original contribution. Because no long-range order, which breaks symmetry, characterizes the bond order, the latter could be a proposal for the so-called hidden order. We calculate analytically the bond parameters in both systems as functions of the field in the low- and high-field limits at zero temperature. At nonzero temperatures, the calculation of the magnetization and bond parameters is carried out by solving the mean-field equations numerically.

Magnetic-field–temperature phase diagram of alternating ferrimagnetic chains: Spin-wave theory from a fully polarized vacuum

W. M. da Silva, R. R. Montenegro-Filho

Quantum critical (QC) phenomena can be accessed by studying quantum magnets under an applied magnetic field ($B$). The QC points are located at the end points of magnetization plateaus and separate gapped and gapless phases. In one dimension, the low-energy excitations of the gapless phase form a Luttinger liquid (LL), and crossover lines bound insulating (plateau) and LL regimes, as well as the QC regime. Alternating ferrimagnetic chains have a spontaneous magnetization at $T=0$ and gapped excitations at zero field. Besides the plateau at the fully polarized (FP) magnetization, due to the gap there is another magnetization plateau at the ferrimagnetic (FRI) magnetization. We develop spin-wave theories to study the thermal properties of these chains under an applied magnetic field: one from the FRI classical state and another from the FP state, comparing their results with quantum Monte Carlo data. We deepen the theory from the FP state, obtaining the crossover lines in the $T$ vs $B$ low-$T$ phase diagram. In particular, from local extreme points in the susceptibility and magnetization curves, we identify the crossover between an LL regime formed by excitations from the FRI state to another built from excitations of the FP state. These two LL regimes are bounded by an asymmetric domelike crossover line, as observed in the phase diagram of other quantum magnets under an applied magnetic field.

Magnetic-Field Effects on Two-Leg Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Ladders: Thermodynamic Properties

Xiaoqun Wang, Lu Yu

Using the recently developed transfer-matrix renormalization group method, we have studied the thermodynamic properties of two-leg antiferromagnetic ladders in a magnetic field. Based on different magnetization behaviors, we found a disordered spin liquid, the Luttinger liquid, spin-polarized phases, and a classical regime. Our calculations in the Luttinger liquid regime suggest that both the divergence of the NMR relaxation rate and the anomalous specific heat behavior observed on Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4 are due to a quasi-one-dimensional effect rather than three-dimensional ordering.
