Macroscopic Squeezing in Bose–Einstein Condensate

Abstract

We study the ground state of a uniform Bose gas at zero temperature in the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation. We find a solution of the HFB equations which obeys the Hugenholtz–Pines theorem. This solution imposes a macroscopic squeezing to the condensed state and as a consequence displays large particle number fluctuations. Particle number conservation is restored by building the appropriate U(1) invariant ground state via the superposition of the squeezed states. The condensed particle number distribution of this new ground state is calculated as well as its fluctuations which present a normal behavior.

Squeezing in the weakly interacting uniform Bose-Einstein condensate

Masudul Haque, Andrei E. Ruckenstein

We investigate the presence of squeezing in the weakly repulsive uniform Bose gas, in both the condensate mode and in the nonzero opposite-momenta mode pairs, using two different variational formulations. We explore the U(1) symmetry breaking and Goldstone's theorem in the context of a squeezed coherent variational wave function and present the associated Ward identity. We show that squeezing of the condensate mode is absent at the mean field Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov level and emerges as a result of fluctuations about mean field as a finite volume effect, which vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. On the other hand, the squeezing of the excitations about the condensate survives the thermodynamic limit and is interpreted in terms of density-phase variables using a number-conserving formulation of the interacting Bose gas.

Fluctuations of a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

Zbigniew Idziaszek, Łukasz Zawitkowski, Mariusz Gajda +1 more

Fluctuations of the number of condensed atoms in a finite-size, weakly interacting Bose gas confined in a box potential are investigated for temperatures up to the critical region. The canonical partition functions are evaluated using a recursive scheme for smaller systems, and a saddle-point approximation for larger samples that allows to treat realistic size systems containing up to N ∼10 5 particles. We point out the importance of particle-number constraint and interactions between out of condensate atoms for the statistics near the critical region. For sufficiently large systems, the crossover from the anomalous to normal scaling of the fluctuations is observed. The excitations are described in a self-consistent way within the Bogoliubov-Popov approximation, and the interactions between thermal atoms are described by means of the Hartree-Fock method.

Gapless Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation for Bose gases

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov, Hagen M. Kleinert

A dilute Bose system with Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. It is shown that the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation can be made both conserving as well as gapless. This is achieved by taking into account all physical normalization conditions, that is, the normalization condition for the condensed particles and that for the total number of particles. Two Lagrange multipliers, introduced for preserving these normalization conditions, make the consideration completely self-consistent.

Coupled Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov kinetic equations for a trapped Bose gas

Milena Imamović-Tomasović, Allan Griffin

Using the Kadanoff-Baym nonequilibrium Green's-function formalism, we derive the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) collisionless kinetic equations and the associated equation of motion for the condensate wave function for a trapped Bose-condensed gas. Our work generalizes earlier work by Kane and Kadanoff for a uniform Bose gas. We include the off-diagonal (anomalous) pair correlations, and thus we have to introduce an off-diagonal distribution function in addition to the normal (diagonal) distribution function. This results in two coupled kinetic equations. If the off-diagonal distribution function can be neglected as a higher-order contribution, we obtain the semiclassical kinetic equation recently used by Zaremba, Griffin, and Nikuni (based on the simpler Popov approximation). We discuss the static local equilibrium solution of our coupled HFB kinetic equations within the semiclassical approximation. We also verify that a solution is the rigid in-phase oscillation of the equilibrium condensate and noncondensate density profiles, oscillating with the trap frequency.

Finite-temperature theory of the trapped two-dimensional Bose gas

Christopher Gies, Brandon P. van Zyl, S. A. Morgan +1 more

We present a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theoretical treatment of the two-dimensional trapped Bose gas and indicate how semiclassical approximations to this and other formalisms have lead to confusion. We numerically obtain results for the quantum-mechanical HFB theory within the Popov approximation and show that the presence of the trap stabilizes the condensate against long wavelength fluctuations. These results are used to show where phase fluctuations lead to the formation of a quasicondensate.
