Matrix rearrangement approach for the entangling power with hybrid qudit systems

Abstract

We extend the former matrix rearrangement approach of the entangling power to the general cases, without requirement of same dimensions of the subsystems. The entangling power of a unitary operator is completely determined by its realignment and partial transposition. As applications, we calculate the entangling power for the Ising interaction and the isotropic Heisenberg interaction in the hybrid qudit $d_1 \times d_2$ systems.

Matrix realignment and partial-transpose approach to entangling power of quantum evolutions

Zhihao Ma, Xiaoguang Wang

Based on the matrix realignment and partial transpose, we develop an approach to the entangling power and operator entanglement of quantum unitary operators. We demonstrate the approach by studying several unitary operators on qudits, and indicate that these two matrix rearrangements are convenient to use in studying entangling capabilities of quantum operators.

Entangling power and operator entanglement in qudit systems

Xiaoguang Wang, Barry C. Sanders, Dominic William Berry

We establish the entangling power of a unitary operator on a general finite-dimensional bipartite quantum system with and without ancillas, and give relations between the entangling power based on the von Neumann entropy and the entangling power based on the linear entropy. Significantly, we demonstrate that the entangling power of a general controlled unitary operator acting on two equal-dimensional qudits is proportional to the corresponding operator entanglement if linear entropy is adopted as the quantity representing the degree of entanglement. We discuss the entangling power and operator entanglement of three representative quantum gates on qudits: the SUM, double SUM, and SWAP gates.

Thermalization of entangling power with arbitrarily weak interactions

Bhargavi Jonnadula, Prabha Mandayam, Karol Życzkowski +1 more

The change of the entangling power of $n$ fixed bipartite unitary gates, describing interactions, when interlaced with local unitary operators describing monopartite evolutions, is studied as a model of the entangling power of generic Hamiltonian dynamics. A generalization of the local unitary averaged entangling power for arbitrary subsystem dimensions is derived. This quantity shows an exponential saturation to the random matrix theory (RMT) average of the bipartite space, indicating thermalization of quantum gates that could otherwise be very non-generic and have arbitrarily small, but nonzero, entanglement. The rate of approach is determined by the entangling power of the fixed bipartite unitary, which is invariant with respect to local unitaries. The thermalization is also studied numerically via the spectrum of the reshuffled and partially transposed unitary matrices, which is shown to tend to the Girko circle law expected for random Ginibre matrices. As a prelude, the entangling power $e_p$ is analyzed along with the gate typicality $g_t$ for bipartite unitary gates acting on two qubits and some higher dimensional systems. We study the structure of the set representing all unitaries projected into the plane $(e_p, g_t)$ and characterize its boundaries which contains distinguished gates including Fourier gate, CNOT and its generalizations, swap and its fractional powers. In this way, a family of gates with extreme properties is identified and analyzed. We remark on the use of these operators as building blocks for many-body quantum systems.

Entangling power of permutations

Lieven Clarisse, Sibasish Ghosh A, Simone Severini B +1 more

The notion of entangling power of unitary matrices was introduced by Zanardi et al., [Phys. Rev. A 62, 030301 (2000)]. We study the entangling power of permutations, given in terms of a combinatorial formula. We show that the permutation matrices with zero entangling power are, up to local unitaries, the identity and the swap. We construct the permutations with the minimum nonzero entangling power for every dimension. With the use of orthogonal latin squares, we construct the permutations with the maximum entangling power for every dimension. Moreover, we show that the value obtained is maximum over all unitaries of the same dimension, with a possible exception for 36. Our result enables us to construct generic examples of 4-qudit maximally entangled states for all dimensions except for 2 and 6. We numerically classify, according to their entangling power, the permutation matrices of dimensions 4 and 9, and we give some estimates for higher dimensions.

Permutation symmetry and entanglement in quantum states of heterogeneous systems

Gururaj Kadiri, S. Sivakumar

Permutation symmetries of multipartite quantum states are defined only when the constituent subsystems are of equal dimensions. In this work we extend this notion of permutation symmetry to heterogeneous systems, that is, systems composed of subsystems having unequal dimensions. Given a tensor product space of $k$ subsystems (of arbitrary dimensions) and a permutation operation $σ$ over $k$ symbols, these states are such that they have identical decompositions (up to an overall phase) in the given tensor product space and the tensor product space obtained by the permuting the subsystems by $σ$. Towards this, we construct a matrix whose action is to simultaneously permute the subsystem label and subsystem dimension of a given state according to permutation $σ$. Eigenvectors of this matrix have the required symmetry. We then examine entanglement of states in the igenspaces of these matrices. It is found that all nonsymmetric eigenspaces of such matrices are completely entangled subspaces, with states being equally entangled in both the given tensor product space and the permuted tensor product space.
