Abstract

The stability of the steady-state solutions of four-wave mixing in photorefractive crystals has been studied. Two complementary methods have been used: linear stability analysis and time integration of the nonlinear equations. A critical dependence of the stability on the phase of the perturbation has been revealed. The existence of two stable solutions for certain values of some parameters has been found. Also, regimes of unstable behavior in cases with a unique steady-state solution for large values of the pump ratio have been found.

Steady state and dynamic gratings in photorefractive four-wave mixing

S. A. Bugaichuk, A I Khizhnyak

The structure and dynamics of the four-wave mixing transmission grating in a photorefractive crystal were investigated. The steady-state grating’s amplitude distribution looks like a motionless soliton. When the value of coupling strength is more than 2, there are three solutions for the steady-state grating: two stable and one unstable. The dynamics of all these gratings are described by the sine-Gordon equation. The four-wave mixing grating’s structure and location in space are determined by the input beams’ ratio, phase difference, or both.

Bistability control by forward pump beam in photorefractive four-wave mixing

Yoshihisa Takayama, Atsushi Okamoto, Kunihiro Sato

A typical method of generating phase conjugate light using photorefractive crystals is four-wave mixing. It is known that the phase conjugate reflectivity is multivalued in a steady state. In this paper, a time domain response analysis of four-wave mixing is carried out and the method for controlling the bistability of the phase conjugate reflectivity is described. First, a steady-state analysis of the four-wave mixing is carried out and the condition is derived for bistability of the phase conjugate reflectivity. Next, by using two different initial conditions, the time response analysis is carried out for the four-wave mixing. Under one of the conditions, no forward pump beam is incident before and after observation of the bistability for measurement of phase conjugate reflectivity. Under another condition, the forward pump is incident before observation of the bistability. The phase conjugate reflectivity is measured after this pump is cut off when a steady state is reached. For each case, the numerical calculations are carried out. It is shown for the first time that the bistability of the phase conjugate reflectivity can be controlled by the initial condition. Further, the temporal and spatial variations of the diffraction grating generated in the crystal are studied and the process of the phase conjugate reflectivity to exhibit bistability is clarified. © 1998 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 2, 81(2): 1–8, 1998

Multivalued solutions for the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive oscillator and stability analysis

P. Mathey, M. Grapinet, Hans Rudolf Jauslin

The analysis of pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity for a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator reveals two domains of multivalued solutions for sufficiently large coupling strength ensured by the crystal. We show that even in a strictly degenerate case the nonzero output intensity can be reached in a broad range of pump ratios r from 10−6 to infinity, including the interval where both pump intensities coincide or are very close to each other. This does not contradict the existence of the known gap in the oscillation threshold near the equal intensities of two pump waves: in this particular region the oscillation is not self-starting. The output intensities for frequency degenerate oscillation are calculated analytically in the standard plane-wave approximation of backward-wave four-wave mixing and numerical simulations are used to analyze the stability of multivalued solutions.

Asymptotic behavior of the boundary value problem of four-wave mixing in photorefractive media

Louis Sica

Solutions to the four-wave mixing problem asymptotically approach a spatial steady state over large interaction distances. In this limit, intensities of the two-point boundary value problem may be found from solutions to quadratic equations. The different limiting behavior exhibited for positive and negative gain has important implications for applications in which linearity of system response is important. In the regime studied, positive gain leads quickly to maximally depleted pumps with increasing input signal. For negative gain, such depletion does not occur until higher signal levels are reached.

Photorefractive four-wave mixing with high-speed modulated beams

Yan Li, Xiudong Sun, Yongyuan Jiang +2 more

Photorefractive four-wave mixing with high-speed modulated beams is studied theoretically. The analytical solutions for the steady-state coupled equations describing four-wave mixing with an arbitrary complex-coupling constant are given without the undepleted-pump approximation.
