Insight into fundamental problems of quantum information in physics

Abstract

The main quantum information measures are discussed with respect to their relation to physics. It is argued that the basic term to choose betweenthe possible ways to measure quantum information is compatibility/incompatibility of the quantum states, resulting in coherent information and here suggested compatible information measures. A sketch of information optimization of a quantum experimental setup is proposed.

Coherent and compatible information: a basis for information analysis of quantum systems

B. A. Grishanin, Victor N. Zadkov

Relevance of key quantum information measures for analysis of quantum systems is discussed. It is argued that possible ways of measuring quantum information are based on compatibility/incompatibility of the quantum states of a quantum system, resulting in the coherent information and introduced her the compatible information measures, respectively. A sketch of an information optimization of a quantum experimental setup is proposed.

Measurement and Physical Content of Quantum Information

B. A. Grishanin, Victor N. Zadkov

Basic quantum information measures involved in the information analysis of quantum systems are considered. It is shown that the main quantum information measurement methods depend on whether the corresponding quantum events are compatible or incompatible. For purely quantum channels, the coherent and compatible information measures, which are qualitatively different, can be distinguished. A general information scheme is proposed for a quantum-physical experiment. In this scheme, informational optimization of an experimental setup is formulated as a mathematical problem.

Incompatible measurements in quantum information science

Otfried Gühne, Erkka Haapasalo, Tristan Kraft +2 more

Some measurements in quantum mechanics disturb each other. This has puzzled physicists since the formulation of the theory, but only in recent decades has the incompatibility of measurements been analyzed in depth and detail, using the notion of joint measurability of generalized measurements. In this Colloquium joint measurability and incompatibility are reviewed from the perspective of quantum information science. The Colloquium starts by discussing the basic definitions and concepts. An overview on applications of incompatibility, such as in measurement uncertainty relations, the characterization of quantum correlations, or information processing tasks like quantum state discrimination, is then presented. Finally, emerging directions of research, such as a resource theory of incompatibility as well as other concepts to grasp the nature of measurements in quantum mechanics, are discussed.

Quantumness of Relative Incompatibility

Manish Shukla, Rounak Mundra, Arun Kumar Pati +2 more

We propose a new measure of relative incompatibility for a quantum system with respect to two non-commuting observables, and call it quantumness of relative incompatibility. In case of a classical state, order of observation is inconsequential, hence probability distribution of outcomes of any observable remains undisturbed. We define relative entropy of the two marginal probability distributions as a measure of quantumness in the state, which is revealed only in presence of two non-commuting observables. Like all other measures, we show that the proposed measure satisfies some basic axioms. Also, we find that this measure depicts complementarity with quantum coherence. The relation is more vivid when we choose one of the observables in such a way that its eigen basis matches with the basis in which the coherence is measured. Our result indicates that the quantumness in a single system is still an interesting question to explore and there can be an inherent feature of the state which manifests beyond the idea of quantum coherence.

Evolution of the Quantitative Measures of Quantum Information: on the Path to a Unified Theory of Quantum Information

B. A. Grishanin, Victor N. Zadkov

The most general approaches to determining the quantitative measure of quantum information are analyzed based on physical content. Dynamic information is proposed as an alternative to coherent information. In a sense, the former corresponds to the use of a set of all possible states in the Hilbert space of a quantum system as the information available for free exchange.
