Simultaneous parametric generation and up-conversion of entangled optical images

M. Yu. Saygin, A. S. Chirkin

A quantum theory of parametric amplification and frequency conversion of an optical image in coupled nonlinear optical processes that include one parametric amplification process at high-frequency pumping and two up-conversion processes in the same pump field is developed. The field momentum operator that takes into account the diffraction and group velocities of the waves is used to derive the quantum equations related to the spatial dynamics of the images during the interaction. An optical scheme for the amplification and conversion of a close image is considered. The mean photon number density and signal-to-noise ratio are calculated in the fixed-pump-field approximation for images at various frequencies. It has been established that the signal-to-noise ratio decreases with increasing interaction length in the amplified image and increases in the images at the generated frequencies, tending to asymptotic values for all interacting waves. The variance of the difference of the numbers of photons is calculated for various pairs of frequencies. The quantum entanglement of the optical images formed in a high-frequency pump field is shown to be converted to higher frequencies during the generation of sum frequencies. Thus, two pairs of entangled optical images are produced in the process considered.

Influence of multiple four-wave-mixing processes on quantum noise of dual-pump phase-sensitive amplification in a fiber

Kyo Inoue

Phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) based on nonlinear parametric interaction provides low-noise amplification such that the noise figure can be 0 dB in principle. However, when an optical fiber is used as a nonlinear medium for PSA, multiple four-wave-mixing (FWM) processes other than the PSA process are induced, which can degrade the PSA noise performance, especially in dual-pump PSA with a narrow signal-pump wavelength separation. This paper investigates the influence of multiple FWM processes on quantum noise of dual-pump PSA in an optical fiber. The noise figure is calculated using quantum-mechanical operators, considering multiple FWM processes with the PSA process. Calculation examples are also presented, which indicate that the noise figure is degraded by 0.2–0.4 dB from the ideal 0 dB, depending on the signal-pump wavelength separation and fiber parameters.

Active SU(1,1) atom interferometry

D Linnemann, J Schulz, W Muessel +5 more

Abstract Active interferometers use amplifying elements for beam splitting and recombination. We experimentally implement such a device by using spin exchange in a Bose–Einstein condensate. The two interferometry modes are initially empty spin states that get spontaneously populated in the process of parametric amplification. This nonlinear mechanism scatters atoms into both modes in a pairwise fashion and generates a non-classical state. Finally, a matched second period of spin exchange is performed that nonlinearly amplifies the output signal and maps the phase onto readily detectable first moments. Depending on the accumulated phase this nonlinear readout can reverse the initial dynamics and deamplify the entangled state back to empty spin states. This sequence is described in the framework of SU(1,1) mode transformations and compared to the SU(2) angular momentum description of passive interferometers.
