Abstract

We show that the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the stargenvalue equation can be completely expressed in terms of the corresponding eigenvalue problem for the quantum Hamiltonian. Our method makes use of a Weyl-type representation of the star-product and of the properties of the cross-Wigner transform, which appears as an intertwining operator. MSC (2000): 47G30, 81S10

Formal solutions of stargenvalue equations

Nuno Costa Dias, João Nuno Prata

The two most important equations of Wigner quantum mechanics are the Moyal and the stargenvalue equations. The latter equation is the Weyl-Wigner transform of the eigenvalue equation of standard operator quantum mechanics and, in the context of the Wigner formulation, is of identical importance. The aim of this letter is to present the formal solution of a general stargenvalue equation in arbitrary dimension, both for continuous and discrete spectra. The properties of the formal solution will be studied and a geometrical interpretation given in terms of star-hypersurfaces in quantum phase space. These results provide further insight into the mathematical structure of phase space quantum mechanics and are especially relevant for the construction of a complete formal solution of Wigner quantum mechanics in the Heisenberg picture. 1

Moyal star product approach to the Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation. (arXiv:math-ph/0409039v1 CROSS LISTED)

Matthew Cargo, Alfonso Gracia-Saz, Robert G. Littlejohn +2 more

The Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation to the eigenvalues of a one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonian is derived through order $\hbar^2$ (i.e., including the first correction term beyond the usual result) by means of the Moyal star product. The Hamiltonian need only have a Weyl transform (or symbol) that is a power series in $\hbar$, starting with $\hbar^0$, with a generic fixed point in phase space. The Hamiltonian is not restricted to the kinetic-plus-potential form. The method involves transforming the Hamiltonian to a normal form, in which it becomes a function of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. Diagrammatic and other techniques with potential applications to other normal form problems are presented for manipulating higher order terms in the Moyal series.

4 METAPLECTIC FORMULATION OF THE WIGNER TRANSFORM AND APPLICATIONS

Nuno Costa Dias, Maurice A. de Gosson, Nuno Prata

We show that the cross Wigner function can be written in the form $W(\psi, \phi)= \hat S (\psi \otimes \overline{\hat\phi})$ where ${\hat\phi}$ is the Fourier transform of $\phi$ and $\hat S$ is a metaplectic operator that projects onto a linear symplectomorphism $S$ consisting of a rotation along an ellipse in phase space (or in the time-frequency space). This formulation can be extended to generic Weyl symbols and yields an interesting fractional generalization of the Weyl-Wigner formalism. It also provides a suitable approach to study the Bopp phase space representation of quantum mechanics, familiar from deformation quantization. Using the "metaplectic formulation" of the Wigner transform we construct a complete set of intertwiners relating the Weyl and the Bopp pseudo-differential operators. This is an important result that allows us to prove the spectral and dynamical equivalence of the Schr\"odinger and the Bopp representations of quantum mechanics.

Quantum normal forms, Moyal star product and Bohr–Sommerfeld approximation

Matthew Cargo, Alfonso Gracia-Saz, Robert G. Littlejohn +2 more

A normal form transformation is carried out on one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonians that transforms them into functions of the quantum harmonic oscillator. The method works with the Weyl transform (or 'symbol') of the Hamiltonian. The Moyal star product is used to carry out the normal form transformation at the level of symbols. Diagrammatic techniques are developed for handling the expressions that result from higher order terms in the Moyal series. Once the normal form is achieved, the Bohr–Sommerfeld formula for the eigenvalues, including higher order corrections, follows easily.

The Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation to the eigenvalues of a one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonian is derived through order ℏ2\hbar^2ℏ2 (i.e., including the first correction term beyond the usual result) by means of the Moyal star product. The Hamiltonian need only have a Weyl transform (or symbol) that is a power series in ℏ\hbarℏ, starting with ℏ0\hbar^0ℏ0, with a generic fixed point in phase space. The Hamiltonian is not restricted to the kinetic-plus-potential form. The method involves transforming the Hamiltonian to a normal form, in which it becomes a function of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. We show that the cross Wigner function can be written in the form W(ψ,ϕ)=S^(ψ⊗ϕ^‾)W(\psi, \phi)= \hat S (\psi \otimes \overline{\hat\phi})W(ψ,ϕ)=S^(ψ⊗ϕ^) where ϕ^{\hat\phi}ϕ^ is the Fourier transform of ϕ\phiϕ and S^\hat SS^ is a metaplectic operator that projects onto a linear symplectomorphism SSS consisting of a rotation along an ellipse in phase space (or in the time-frequency space). This formulation can be extended to generic Weyl symbols and yields an interesting fractional generalization of the Weyl-Wigner formalism.
