Possible Phases and Some Properties of the One-Dimensional Metal with the Half-Filled Band

Abstract

A one-dimensional metal with a half-filled band is studied by the model of Dzyaloshinskii and Larkin. The next-order renormalization group theory is applied. The invariant charges become smooth functions over all temperature. The possible phases–the singlet and the triplet Cooper pairing states, and SDW and CDW at T →0 are discussed. The criterion for these phases depends on the bare coupling constants via their signs and relative magnitudes. The phase diagram differs from that of the first-order theory. The Green's function, the vertex function, and 2pF and uniform response functions are found in the asymptotic power form. The exponents are universal except for the case of the repulsive couplings. The results are compared with the exact theorems about the Hubbard and Tomonaga models.

PHASE DIAGRAM OF THE ONE-DIMENSIONAL t–U–J MODEL WITH ON-BOND REPULSION AT HALF FILLING

Hanqin Ding, Yanshen Wang

By using the bosonization approach and the renormalization group (RG) technique, we study the half-filled band one-dimensional t–U–J model with additional on-bond repulsion (W>0) in the weak-coupling regime. The presence of on-bond repulsion is responsible for realization of a metallic phase in the system, and the phase diagram is strongly controlled by the symmetry of the model. By analyzing the RG flow diagram and comparing order parameters, the phase boundaries are determined and the structure of the phase diagram is clarified. In the case of SU (2) ⊗ SU (2) symmetry, the phase diagram consists of a metallic phase characterized by a Luttinger liquid (LL) and two insulting phases characterized by the degenerate spin-density-wave (SDW) and the bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW). In the SU (2) ⊗ U(1)-symmetric case, the phase diagram contains two metallic phases: a LL and a Luther–Emery phase, and three insulating phases: the transverse SDW ( SDW ±), the longitudinal SDW ( SDW z) and the dimerized BCDW. The insulating charge-density-wave and bond-spin-density-wave (BSDW) phases are always suppressed in the ground state. In addition, the system show a long-ranged order in the BCDW and SDW z phases.

Phase diagram and correlation functions of the half-filled extended Hubbard model in one dimension

Johannes Voit

The extended Hubbard model in one dimension is studied for half-filled bands using a continuum theory based on the Luttinger model. Interactions going beyond the Luttinger model are treated with a renormalization group. We compute correlation functions and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. It compares favorably with earlier numerical work. Specifically, we identify additional interaction terms coupling charge and spin degrees of freedom; one of them is shown to mediate the crossover from a continuous to a first-order transition from spin- to charge-density waves at a finite value of U=2V. Our approach suggests viewing the model on this line as two weakly coupled interpenetrating systems of up-spin and down-spin electrons with strong backscattering interactions favoring charge-density waves separately in each of the subsystems. A first-order transition occurring for attractive interactions is interpreted as a characteristic instability of the Luttinger liquid towards phase separation. We finally discuss a possible equivalence to some recent studies of coupled two-dimensional XY models.

Finite Temperature Phase Diagram in the Half-Filled Extended Hubbard Model

Jian Zhong

The CDW-SDW transition in the half-filled extended Hubbard model is investigated with the broken-symmetry Hartree theory formulated in terms of the Bogoliubov variational approach. The finite temperature phase-diagram in the weak coupling regime is derived analytically with a model density of states. The results show that there exist charge-order and antiferromagnetic order, but no mixed phase exists at any temperatures.

Phase Diagram of the One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model at Half Filling

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Akira Furusaki

We reexamine the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions. We calculate second-order corrections to coupling constants in the weak-coupling renormalization-group approach ( g-ology) to show that the bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for weak couplings in between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons destabilizes the BCDW state and gives rise to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line.

Phase Diagram of the One-Dimensional Half-Filled Extended Hubbard Model

Satoshi Ejima, Satoshi Nishimoto

We determine the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (nearest-neighbor) repulsive interaction U (V) and nearest-neighbor hopping t using the density-matrix renormalization group technique. Based on the results of the excitation gaps, Luttinger-liquid exponents, and bond-order-wave (BOW) order parameter, we confirm that the BOW phase appears in a substantial region between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave phases. Each phase boundary is determined by multiple means and it allows us to make a cross-check on the validity of our estimations. We also find that the BOW-CDW transition changes from continuous to first order at the tricritical point (U(t),V(t)) approximately (5.89 t,3.10 t) and the BOW phase shrinks to zero at the critical end point (U(c),V(c)) approximately (9.25 t,4.76 t).

Thermodynamic Properties of the One-Dimensional Half-Filled-Band Hubbard Model

Hiroyuki Shiba, Philip A. Pincus

In order to investigate the thermal properties (specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, entropy, internal energy, and some correlation functions) of the one-dimensional half-filled-band Hubbard model, we have studied linear chains and rings containing two to six atoms, by performing machine calculations. Supplementing the low-temperature behavior obtained from the exact solution for the infinite chain by Lieb and Wu, our results should be suggestive of the properties of the infinite system throughout the entire temperature domain. It is shown that when the ratio of the correlation energy $U$ to the total width $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ of the band of single-particle excitations is larger than 1, the specific heat has two peaks. The high-temperature peak arises from the gradual metal-insulator transition (or the gradual formation of local moments), while the low-temperature peak is associated with the antiferromagnetic short-range ordering. When $\frac{U}{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ becomes small, the two peaks merge into one. This picture is consistent with all other thermal properties, including correlation functions. The high-temperature properties are compared with the results predicted by Hubbard's approximate theory based on the truncation of the equations of motion of the Green's functions.
