Abstract

Two-hole YBCO bulk and one-hole YBCO, BSCCO thick-film RF SQUIDs have been fabricated and operated at 77 K. RF SQUID behavior has been studied using commercial RF SQUID electronics with external RF and AF sources. Flux noise density of these SQUIDs depends on the quality of the microbridge. Flux noise present in various reported high-T/sub c/ film RF SQUIDs is compared.

Noise measurements in a 2-hole radio frequency SQUID at liquid nitrogen temperature

S.P. Harrop, M. S. Colclough, Colin E Gough +2 more

The authors report measurements of the noise in a two-hole RF SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) fabricated from bulk YBCO by an erosion technique in the frequency range 30 mHz to 1 kHz. Above 100 Hz the noise is essentially white with an RMS (root mean square) value of 5*10/sup -4/ phi /sub 0// square root Hz and is dominated by noise from the electronics. Below 10-Hz the noise power rises as 1/f/sup 0/9/.>

Substrate step-edge YBa2Cu3O7 rf SQUIDs

K.P. Daly, William D. Dozier, John F. Burch +4 more

We have developed a technique which permits high-yield fabrication of microbridges and low noise YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in epitaxial thin films. These SQUIDs operate over a wide temperature range extending from 4 K to close to the superconducting transition temperature. Measurements of an rf SQUID operating at 77 K give a peak-to-peak flux sensitivity of 36 μV/Φ0 and a flux noise at 10 Hz of 1.5× 10−4 Φ0/√Hz. Device yields over 80% have been obtained.

Fabrication and measurement of cylindrical Nb3Ge rf SQUIDs

Shinya Kuriki, M. Suehiro, Hajime Konishi

Nb3Ge thin-film microbridges are fabricated on a cylindrical substrate to form rf SQUIDs. High temperature operations well above 10 K (up to 17.5 K) are obtained. An intrinsic flux noise of the order of 10−4 Φ0/(Hz)1/2 is estimated from the step rise parameter. Comparison with a theoretical noise indicates a nonsinusoidal current phase relation of the microbridge.

rf break-junction SQUID’s at 77 K

I K Harvey, R.A. Binks, R. Driver

Break-junction rf superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID’s) have been developed using bulk YBa2Cu3O7 ceramic samples which have been fabricated in the laboratory. The SQUID’s have been produced in both single, and two-hole topologies and their noise characteristics have been measured at 77 K. The equivalent flux noise of the two-hole SQUID at a frequency of 200 Hz was found to be 6.8×10−4 flux quantum/(Hz)1/2.

Noise measurements in a two-hole radio frequency SQUID at liquid-nitrogen temperature

S.P. Harrop, Colin E Gough, Mark N. Keene +1 more

The authors report measurements of the noise in a two-hole RF SQUID fabricated from YBCO by an erosion technique. The noise was measured from 10 mHz to 1 kHz. Above 25 Hz the noise is essentially white with an RMS value of 1.3*10 -3 phi 0 Hz -1/2 and is dominated by the noise of the amplifier. Below 1 Hz the noise power rises as 1/f 1.3 .

Operation of rf SQUID magnetometers with a multi-turn flux transformer integrated with a superconducting labyrinth resonator

Y. Zhang, H.R. Yi, Jürgen Schubert +4 more

This paper demonstrates a design of a planar multi-turn flux transformer integrated with a superconducting labyrinth resonator serving as the planar tank circuit for a radio frequency (rf) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. All structures were patterned from 200 nm-thick epitaxial YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ (YBCO) films grown on 10/spl times/10 mm/sup 2/ LaAlO/sub 3/ substrates. A double-hole washer SQUID had one hole coupled to the input coil of the labyrinth resonator and the other hole coupled to the input coil of the multi-turn flux transformer using a flip-chip configuration to form a magnetometer. This resonator has a good high-frequency coupling to the double-hole rf SQUID, thus securing its optimum operation. For the voltage-to-flux (transfer function) coefficient, a value of 300-500 /spl mu/V//spl Phi//sub 0/ was obtained. A SQUID magnetometer with an inductance of 210 pH exhibited white flux noise of 11.5 /spl mu//spl Phi//sub 0///spl radic/Hz at 77 K. This corresponded to a white magnetic field noise of 11.5 fT//spl radic/Hz.
