Abstract

In this paper, we explore a novel approach to evaluate the inherent UEP (unequal error protection) properties of irregular LDPC (low-density parity-check) codes over BECs (binary erasure channels). Exploiting the finite-length scaling methodology, suggested by Amraoui et. al., we introduce a scaling approach to approximate the bit erasure rates of variable nodes with different degrees in the waterfall region of the peeling decoder. Comparing the bit erasure rates obtained from Monte Carlo simulation with the proposed scaling approximations, we demonstrate that the scaling approach provides a close approximation for a wide range of code lengths (between 1000 and 8000). In view of the complexity associated with the numerical evaluation of the scaling approximation, we also derive simpler upper and lower bounds.

Upper Bounding the Performance of Arbitrary Finite LDPC Codes on Binary Erasure Channels

Chih-chun Wang, Sanjeev R. Kulkarni, H. Vincent Poor

Assuming iterative decoding for binary erasure channels (BECs), a novel tree-based technique for upper bounding the bit error rates (BERs) of arbitrary, finite low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is provided and the resulting bound can be evaluated for all operating erasure probabilities, including both the waterfall and the error floor regions. This upper bound can also be viewed as a narrowing search of stopping sets, which is an approach different from the stopping set enumeration used for lower bounding the error floor. When combined with optimal leaf-finding modules, this upper bound is guaranteed to be tight in terms of the asymptotic order. The Boolean framework proposed herein further admits a composite search for even tighter results. For comparison, a refinement of the algorithm is capable of exhausting all stopping sets of size les 13 for irregular LDPC codes of length n ap 500, which requires (13500) ap 1.67 times 1025trials if a brute force approach is taken. These experiments indicate that this upper bound can be used both as an analytical tool and as a deterministic worst-performance (error floor) guarantee, the latter of which is crucial to optimizing LDPC codes for extremely low BER applications, e.g., optical/satellite communications

Further results on finite-length scaling for iteratively decoded LDPC ensembles

Ala Eddine Kaddour Amraoui, Andrea Montanari A, T. Richardson +1 more

The behavior of iteratively decoded low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel in the so-called "waterfall region" is investigated and shows that the performance curves in this region follow a very basic scaling law. This scaling law, combined with previously known expressions for the error floor, yields a promising direction for analyzing the performance of irregular LDPC codes of practical lengths.

Multi-edge type unequal error protecting low-density parity-check codes

H. V. Beltrão Neto, Werner Henkel, Valdemar C. da Rocha

Irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are particularly well-suited for transmission schemes that require unequal error protection (UEP) of the transmitted data due to the different connection degrees of its variable nodes. However, this UEP capability is strongly dependent on the connection profile among the protection classes. This paper applies a multi-edge type analysis of LDPC codes for optimizing such a connection profile according to the performance requirements of each protection class. This allows the construction of UEP-LDPC codes where the difference between the performance of the protection classes can be adjusted and with an UEP capability that does not vanish as the number of decoding iterations grows.

Finite-length analysis of the TEP decoder for LDPC ensembles over the BEC

Pablo M. Olmos, Fernando Pérez‐Cruz, Luis Salamanca +1 more

In this work, we analyze the finite-length performance of low-density parity check (LDPC) ensembles decoded over the binary erasure channel (BEC) using the tree-expectation propagation (TEP) algorithm. In a previous paper, we showed that the TEP improves the BP performance for decoding regular and irregular short LDPC codes, but the perspective was mainly empirical. In this work, given the degree-distribution of an LDPC ensemble, we explain and predict the range of code lengths for which the TEP improves the BP solution. In addition, for LDPC ensembles that present a single critical point, we propose a scaling law to accurately predict the performance in the waterfall region. These results are of critical importance to design practical LDPC codes for the TEP decoder.

On Decoding of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Over the Binary Erasure Channel

Hossein Pishro-Nik, Faramarz Fekri

This paper investigates decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC). We study the iterative and maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of LDPC codes on this channel. We derive bounds on the ML decoding of LDPC codes on the BEC. We then present an improved decoding algorithm. The proposed algorithm has almost the same complexity as the standard iterative decoding. However, it has better performance. Simulations show that we can decrease the error rate by several orders of magnitude using the proposed algorithm. We also provide some graph-theoretic properties of different decoding algorithms of LDPC codes over the BEC which we think are useful to better understand the LDPC decoding methods, in particular, for finite-length codes.

Finite-length analysis of low-density parity-check codes on the binary erasure channel

Changyan Di, D. Proietti, I. Emre Telatar +2 more

In this paper, we are concerned with the finite-length analysis of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes when used over the binary erasure channel (BEC). The main result is an expression for the exact average bit and block erasure probability for a given regular ensemble of LDPC codes when decoded iteratively. We also give expressions for upper bounds on the average bit and block erasure probability for regular LDPC ensembles and the standard random ensemble under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding. Finally, we present what we consider to be the most important open problems in this area.
