Abstract

By using coding and combinational techniques, an explicit formula is derived which enumerates the complete weight distribution of decodable words of block codes using partially known weight distributions. Also, an approximation formula for nonbinary block codes is obtained. These results give exact and approximate expressions for the decoder error probability P/sub E/(u) of block codes.>

On the decoder error probability of linear codes

K. M. Cheung

By using coding and combinatorial techniques, an approximate formula for the weight distribution of decodable words of most linear block codes is evaluated. This formula is then used to give an approximate expression for the decoder error probability P(sub E)(u) of linear block codes, given that an error pattern of weight u has occurred. It is shown that P(sub E)(u) approaches the constant Q as u gets large, where Q is the probability that a completely random error pattern will cause decoder error.

On the Decoder Error Probability for BCH Codes

Mingoo Kim, Jaehong Lee

A general formula is derived to obtain the decoder error probability for linear block codes. A bounded-distance decoder is assumed. It is shown that the decoder error probability for binary linear codes becomes a constant value if the weight distribution of the code is binomial-like. An exact decoder error probability for Reed-Solomon codes is obtained from this formula. Bounds on the decoder error probability for binary BCH codes are derived because the weight distributions of binary BCH codes are unknown except for some special codes. It is also shown that the decoder error probability approaches to (formula) rapidly in t-errors correcting (n, k) binary primitive BCH codes as code length n increases and the weight of word h approaches to n2.

On the Probability of Undetected Error for Linear Block Codes

Jack K. Wolf, Arnold M. Michelson, Allen H. Levesque

The problem of computing the probability of undetected error is considered for linear block codes used for error detection. The recent literature is first reviewed and several results are extended. It is pointed out that an exact calculation can be based on either the weight distribution of a code or its dual. Using the dual code formulation, the probability of undetected error for the ensemble of all nonbinary linear block codes is derived as well as a theorem that shows why the probability of undetected error may not be a monotonic function of channel error rate for some poor codes. Several bounds on the undetected error probability are then presented. We conclude with detailed examples of binary and nonbinary codes for which exact results can be obtained. An efficient technique for measuring an unknown weight distribution is suggested and exact results are compared with experimental results.

On the error-correcting capability of optimum linear block codes

O.O. Olaniyan, L.F. Turner

The performance of optimum linear block codes has been examined by computer simluation, and the error distribution at the decoder output, the block-error probability and the bit-error probability have been determined for the codes when they are used on a binary symmetric channel with random errors. A table showing the distribution of errors in the decoder output is presented, and it is shown how the table can be used to determine exact values for the bit-error probability and the block-error probability. The exact values of bit-error probability computed from the table are compared with values obtained using a known theoretical approximation to the bit-error probability, and some conclusions are drawn as to the general usefulness of the theoretical approximation. Also, block-error probabilities are computed from the information presented in the table and these values are compared with the estimates of block-error probability obtained from minimumdistance considerations.

On the computation of the probability of post-decoding error events for block codes (Corresp.)

Zelma McC. Huntoon, Arnold M. Michelson

The computation of the probability of certain post-decoding error events is formulated for block codes whose weight distributions are known. A bounded-distance decoder for group codes is assumed. Numerical examples included show post-decoding character error rates for the Golay code and for some Reed-Solomon codes and the distribution of post-decoding errors for the same Reed-Solomon codes. An extension to errors and erasures decoding is also given.

In this correspondence, the exact weight distribution for closest coset decoding of |u|u+v| constructed codes is derived. The results allow more accurate evaluations of the decoding error probabilities.
