Steady-state 2π pulses in an amplifying medium with polarization relaxation and nonresonant linear losses

Abstract

An analysis is made of the propagation of 2π pulses in an amplifying medium exhibiting polarization relaxation and nonresonant linear losses. It is shown that the combined influence of such relaxation and losses may stabilize 2π pulses. Changes in the pulse parameters and their asymptotic values are considered. The distance in which there is a characteristic change in the pulse parameters is estimated for ruby laser radiation.

Influence of vibrational relaxation on energy characteristics of a laser pulse in a molecular amplifier

Maria V. Bogdanova, Tamara M. Il'inova, A O Markano +1 more

Characteristics of the interaction of a laser pulse with a molecular medium are analyzed theoretically in the case when vibrational relaxation takes place in the ground and excited electronic states. The diffusion approximation is used to describe the relaxation transitions. The same approximation is employed in an analysis of the establishment of the limiting steady-state energy of a pulse in a molecular laser amplifier with linear nonresonance losses.

Coherent amplification of the short optical pulse in a non-linear birefringent medium

Elena V. Kazantseva, Andrei I. Maimistov, S. O. Elyutin +1 more

The propagation of the solitary waves in the resonant birefringent amplifier with linear losses is considered. The birefringent optical linear medium contains two-level atoms with the upper state degenerated over projection of angular moment. It is assumed that population of resonance levels of atoms is inverted. The steady state pulse of polarized radiation that is vectonal generalization of the known π-pulse was analytically found. Numerical simulations demonstrate the formation dynamics solitary waves originated in birefringent amplifier.

Characteristics of coherent amplification of short optical pulses in media with a nonresonant polarizability

V. A. Yurevich

A calculation is reported of the parameters of amplification of light pulses in crystalline laser media with a nonresonant nonlinear polarizability when the duration of the pulses being amplified is less than the phase relaxation time of the medium. A reduction in the contrast and an increase in the frequency of the nutation substructure of the radiation intensity, and also a shift and asymmetry of the Stark doublet structure in the spectrum of the pulses are predicted.

Pulse Propagation in a Laser Amplifier

James P. Wittke, Peter J. Warter

Pulse propagation in maser-type traveling-wave amplifiers with a homogeneously broadened transition is treated by a formalism analogous to the Bloch equations. Phenomenological dephasing (T2) and recovery (T1) times are defined, and a linear (nonsaturable) loss mechanism is included. In the numerical calculations, only the case of negligible excitation during the time it takes a pulse to pass is considered. When pulses are allowed to grow until the amplifier is ``saturated,'' steady-state pulses having a unique shape and intensity independent of the initial pulse are found. The parameters of these steady-state pulses depend only on the ratio of the linear loss and gain coefficients. Steady-state pulses have a peak intensity that decreases monotonically from infinity to zero as the linear loss coefficient varies from zero to the gain coefficient, while the pulse width correspondingly varies from zero to infinity, and the pulse energy varies from a finite value to zero. Steady-state pulses propogate at a velocity less than that of the small signal velocity in the medium.

Interaction between radiation and quantum systems with relaxing sublevels

Tamara M. Il'inova, M P Il'inov, R. V. Khokhlov

A theoretical analysis is given of the propagation of resonance radiation in a medium with relaxing sublevels. When the time constants of changes in the optical field are comparable with the relaxation times, the relaxation of sublevels gives rise to several special features in the behavior of steady-state π pulses. The analysis explains several effects observed in various experimental situations, including the spectral "hole burning" effect.

Pulse propagation stability in absorbing and amplifying media

Jean‐Claude Diels, E. Hahn

Simple stability conditions are obtained for pulse propagation in a two-level system with linear scattering and combined homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening. Properties of steady-state π and\pi\sqrt{2}area pulses are reviewed. Computer simulation of an approach to equilibrium pulse propagation is presented in a few cases for initially perturbed pulses.
