Abstract

Continuously-tunable slow and fast light is experimentally demonstrated using silicon microring add-drop filter with mutual mode coupling. Pulse delay and advancement can be achieved by thermal tuning at the drop port of the resonator.

Optically Tunable Delay Line in Silicon Microring Resonator Based on Thermal Nonlinear Effect

Fangfei Liu, Qiang Li, Ziyang Zhang +2 more

We experimentally demonstrate optically tunable delay line in a silicon microring resonator with a 20- m radius. The delay-tuning mechanism is based on the red shift of the resonance induced by thermal nonlinear effect. We investigate the delay performance of three modulation formats-non-return-to-zero (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ), and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals at different data rates. Tunable delay is achieved by controlling the power of the continuous-wave (CW) pump with very low tuning threshold, which could be used in microring-resonator-based slow-light structure.

Tunable slow and fast light in a silicon-on-insulator Fano resonator

Tianqi Xu, Shaonan Zheng, Yang Qiu +5 more

Tunable slow and fast light generation in a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) Fano resonator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The slow and fast light generation with symmetric and asymmetric coupling conditions of the Fano resonator is theoretically analyzed. Under a slightly imbalanced coupling condition, the two output ports of the Fano resonator could produce a fast light and a slow light, respectively. By utilizing the thermo-optic (TO) effect to change the phase difference of the two optical beams coupled into the resonator, the transition of fast and slow light can be realized at the fixed resonance wavelength. Experimental results show that a slow-to-fast transition (group delay from 0.852 to -1.057 ns) at one resonance wavelength, and a fast-to-slow transition (group delay from -0.22 to 0.867 ns) at another resonance wavelength are realized simultaneously by controlling the microheater to tune the phase difference.

Regulation of fast and slow light characteristics of the add-drop ring-resonator employing an assisted ring

Weiguo Jiang, Yundong Zhang, Fuxing Zhu +2 more

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the fast and slow light characteristics of the add-drop ring-resonator (ADRR) can be regulated by introducing an assisted ring. This novel geometry is named ring-assisted add-drop ring-resonator (RA-ADRR). When the assisted ring is under-coupled, the fast and slow light characteristics of through and drop ports of the RA-ADRR will be reversed, which is different from the coupled resonator induced transparency (CRIT) studied previously. With the decrease of loss, the dispersion peak (dip) of the two ports will grow up towards the opposite directions and finally the inversion occurs. Meanwhile, we find that by increasing the circumference of the assisted ring, the dispersion of the two ports could be improved proportionally. The experimental results show that the maximum group delays of the through and drop ports are 115 ns and -485 ns, respectively. This novel phenomenon could greatly enhance the sensitivity of slow light interferometers and also has potential applications in optical communication, network, filtering and switching.
