Abstract

We study entanglement migration between modulus and phase for parametric down-conversion photon pairs which propagate through dispersive media. In addition, we discuss a related dispersion suppression effect which occurs for factorable, highly asymmetric states.

Entanglement Propagation in Photon Pairs created by Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

Malcolm N. O’Sullivan-Hale, Kam Wai Clifford Chan, Robert W. Boyd

We experimentally observe the apparent loss and recovery of spatial entanglement during the propagation of photon pairs created in SPDC and understand it as a migration of the entanglement from the intensity to the phase.

Entanglement migration of biphotons in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Kam Wai Clifford Chan, Juan P. Torres, Joseph H. Eberly

We demonstrate theoretically the migration of entanglement of photon pairs produced in spontaneous parametric down-conversion from intensity to phase, and propose two experiments to observe the migration and to detect the ldquomissingrdquo entanglement.

Transverse entanglement migration in Hilbert space

Kam Wai Clifford Chan, Juan P. Torres, Joseph H. Eberly

We show that, although the amount of mutual entanglement of photons propagating in free space is fixed, the type of correlations between the photons that determine the entanglement can dramatically change during propagation. We show that this amounts to a migration of entanglement in Hilbert space, rather than real space. For the case of spontaneous parametric down-conversion, the migration of entanglement in transverse coordinates takes place from modulus to phase of the biphoton state and back again. We propose an experiment to observe this migration in Hilbert space and to determine the full entanglement.

Dispersion cancellation and non-classical noise reduction for large photon-number states

J. D. Franson, Michael J. Fitch

Summary form only given. Two classical pulses of light propagating through two distant, dispersive media will experience dispersion that depends only on the local properties of the two media. It was previously shown, however, that two entangled photons propagating through two dispersive media, can experience a cancellation of dispersion in the sense that the two photons will arrive at two equally-distant detectors at the same time despite the dispersion. Other forms of dispersion cancellation have also been described. We generalize dispersion cancellation to entangled states containing a large number N of photons in each pulse.

Control, measurement, and propagation of entanglement in photon pairs generated through type-II parametric down-conversion

Yasser Jerónimo-Moreno, Alfred B. U’Ren

We present a study of the effects of dispersion on the properties of photon pairs generated by type-II collinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Specifically, we take into consideration the effects of a chirped pump, as well as of dispersive propagation of the photon pairs. We present expressions for the joint amplitude both in the spectral and temporal domains, as well as for the chronocyclic Wigner function of heralded single photons, which fully characterizes the single-photon spectral (temporal) properties. On the one hand, we show that unwanted effects of pump chirp in terms of the heralded single-photon duration can be suppressed for states designed to be factorable and spectrally elongated. On the other hand, we show that pump chirp constitutes an effective tool for the control of the degree of photon-pair entanglement. We show that when frequency-entangled photon pairs propagate through a dispersive medium, entanglement can ``migrate'' between the modulus and phase of the joint temporal amplitude.
