Abstract

We study the enhanced Kerr-nonlinear coefficient in a three-level A-type atomic system for various coupling-beam powers. The Kerr-nonlinear coefficient behaves very differently in the strong and the weak coupling power regions and changes sign when the coupling or probe frequency detuning changes sign. Comparisons of Kerr-nonlinear coefficients as functions of probe frequency detuning, coupling power, and coupling frequency detuning are presented.

Enhanced Kerr Nonlinearity via Atomic Coherence in a Three-Level Atomic System

Hai Wang, David J. Goorskey, Min Xiao

We measure the Kerr-nonlinear index of refraction of a three-level Lambda-type atomic system inside an optical ring cavity. The Kerr nonlinearity is modified and greatly enhanced near atomic resonant conditions for both probe and coupling beams. The Kerr nonlinear coefficient n(2) changes sign when the coupling beam frequency detuning switches sign, which can lead to interesting applications in optical devices such as all-optical switches.

Modified self-Kerr-nonlinearity in a four-level N -type atomic system

Jiteng Sheng, Xihua Yang, Haibin Wu +1 more

The self-Kerr-nonlinearity of a four-level $\mathsf{N}$-type atomic system is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The self-Kerr-nonlinear coefficient ${n}_{2}$ of the probe beam is greatly enhanced near atomic resonance, and can be dramatically modified by changing the switching laser power. With an increasing switching laser power, the slope of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient ${n}_{2}$ around the atomic resonance changes from negative to positive, and the value of ${n}_{2}$ varies from \ensuremath{\sim}--4 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ to 4 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ cm${}^{2}$/W at certain near-resonant probe frequency detunings. Such controllable Kerr nonlinearity can find applications in optoelectronic devices, such as all-optical switching and logic gates.

Enhancement of cross-Kerr nonlinearity in four-level N-type atomic sysem based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Le Thuy An, Vu Ngọc Sau, Doan Hoai Son

We study enhancement of cross-Kerr nonlinearity in four-level N-type atomic system by the analytical method. The results apply to the 87Rb atoms and show that in the presence of the EIT effect (i.e., the presence of coupling laser field), the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced several order of magnitudes (about 10-6 cm2/W) around the EIT window. That is, on the Kerr nonlinear graph the two positive and negative values are found on both sides of the resonant frequency. The amplitude and sign of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient can be controlled versus the intensity or frequency of the coupling laser field. Analytical results are useful for experimental observation and related applications.

Study of enhancement of self-Kerr nonlinearity in three-level cascade EIT medium with doppler broadening

Vu Ngọc Sau, PHAM Tue

We study enhancement of self-Kerr nonlinearity in three-level cascade EIT medium by the analytical method. The results apply to the 85Rb atoms and show that, in the presence of the EIT effect, the Kerr nonlinear coefficient is enhanced several order of magnitudes (about 10-5 cm2/W) around transparent region. That is, on the Kerr nonlinear graph the two positive and negative values are found on both sides of the resonant frequency. The amplitude and sign of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient can be controlled versus the intensity or frequency of the coupling laser field. Influence of Doppler broadening leads to a decrease in the amplitude of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient. Analytical results are useful for experimental observation and related applications.

All-optical switching via enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in three-level atoms

Hai Wang, David J. Goorskey, Min Xiao

Summary form only given. The reduced absorption and enhanced nonlinearity in a three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system are very important in achieving an effective all-optical switching action. The Kerr-nonlinear index of refraction of a three-level EIT medium can be greatly enhanced near resonance due to atomic coherence induced in such a system in comparison with a two-level atomic system, as we have shown by using an optical ring cavity. Both the magnitude and sign of the Kerr-nonlinear index change dramatically for different frequency detunings of the controlling (or coupling) or cavity (or probe) field. Bistability and dynamic instability occur when such a three-level /spl Lambda/-type EIT system is placed inside an optical ring cavity and the controlling and cavity input intensities to exceed certain threshold values. In this paper, we present a recent experimental demonstration of controlling the cavity output intensity by modulating the frequency detuning of the controlling beam.

Enhancement of Third-Order Self-Kerr Nonlinearity and Cross-Kerr Nonlinearity in Three-Level Atomic systems

Liu Zhi-Yuan, Yupeng Duan, Ying-Jie Du

Abstract We theoretically investigate the self-nonlinear and cross-nonlinear responses of the Λ-type, V-type, and ladder-type three-level atomic systems. The analytical solutions of the cross-nonlinearity are obtained by using an iterative method. These analytical expressions reveal that the atomic decay rates and two-photon resonance are closely related to the cross-nonlinear response. For the Λ-type system, the relaxation rate between the ground-state sublevels determines the amplitude and linewidth of the cross-nonlinearity. For the ladder-type system, the lifetime of the upper excited state governs the amplitude and linewidth of the cross-nonlinearity. In both systems, the amplitude of the cross-nonlinearity is significantly enhanced, and the linewidth is greatly compressed simultaneously. In contrast, for the V-type three-level system, the amplitude and linewidth of the cross-nonlinearity are related to the spontaneous emission rate of the excited states, where neither the amplitude enhancement nor the linewidth compression is observed. We conclude that the cross-nonlinear response can reach or even exceed the linear response in the Λ-type system when the relaxation rate between the ground states is sufficiently small, or in the ladder-type system when the spontaneous emission rate of the upper excited state is sufficiently small. Compared with the crossnonlinearity, the self-nonlinearity is related to the Rabi frequency and detuning of the coupling field. Its amplitude decreases with the increase of the coupling Rabi frequency, while it can be increased to a certain extent with the increase of the coupling detuning. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the optimization and application of strong nonlinear effects in three-level atomic systems.
