Abstract

We propose a scheme to construct the efficient universal quantum circuit for qubit systems with the assistance of possibly available auxiliary Hilbert spaces. An elementary two-ququart gate, termed the controlled-double-not gate, is proposed first in ququart (four-level) systems, and its physical implementation is illustrated in the four-dimensional Hilbert spaces built by the path and polarization states of photons. Then an efficient universal quantum circuit for ququart systems is constructed using the gate and the quantum Shannon decomposition method. By introducing auxiliary two-dimensional Hilbert spaces, the universal quantum circuit for qubit systems is finally achieved using the result obtained in ququart systems with the lowest complexity.

Optimizing quantum circuits using higher-dimensional Hilbert spaces

Liu Kai, Wendong Li, Wen-Zhao Zhang +3 more

Inspired by Lanyon (B. P. Lanyon et al. 2008 Nature Physics. 5 134) successfully simplifying the three-qubit Toffoli gate, we present a novel scheme that optimizes universal quantum logic circuits using assisted higher-dimensional Hilbert space. We construct a more efficient two-qubit circuit and a more effective three-qubit universal quantum circuit by using assisted dimension, Cosine-Sine Decomposition (CSD) and Quantum Shannon Decomposition (QSD). Meanwhile, we present the formula for the complexity of arbitrary n-qubit universal quantum gate. We propose the physical implementation of this scheme by linear optical circuits and cavity-QED. The results show that the two-qubit and three-qubit universal quantum circuits are respectively close and superior to the current optimal scheme in complexity. And with the increase of the number of qubits, the advantage of our scheme will become increasingly prominent.

Universal Quantum Multi‐Qubit Entangling Gates with Auxiliary Spaces

Wen‐Qiang Liu, Hai‐Rui Wei, L. C. Kwek

Abstract Universal quantum entangling gates are a crucial building block in the large‐scale quantum computation and quantum communication, and it is an important task to find simple ways to implement them. Here an effective quantum circuit for the implementation of a controlled‐NOT (CNOT) gate is constructed by introducing a non‐computational quantum state in the auxiliary space. Furthermore, the method is extended to the construction of a general n ‐control‐qubit Toffoli gate with qubit–qudit gates and single‐qudit gates. Based on the presented quantum circuits, the polarization CNOT and Toffoli gates with linear optics are designed by operating on the spatial‐mode degree of freedom of photons. The proposed optical schemes can be achieved with a higher success probability and no extra auxiliary photons are needed.

Photonic ququart logic assisted by the cavity-QED system

Ming-Xing Luo, Yun Deng, Hui-Ran Li +1 more

Universal quantum logic gates are important elements for a quantum computer. In contrast to previous constructions of qubit systems, we investigate the possibility of ququart systems (four-dimensional states) dependent on two DOFs of photon systems. We propose some useful one-parameter four-dimensional quantum transformations for the construction of universal ququart logic gates. The interface between the spin of a photon and an electron spin confined in a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity is applied to build universal ququart logic gates on the photon system with two freedoms. Our elementary controlled-ququart gates cost no more than 8 CNOT gates in a qubit system, which is far less than the 104 CNOT gates required for a general four-qubit logic gate. The ququart logic is also used to generate useful hyperentanglements and hyperentanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting code, which may be available in modern physical technology.

Synthesis of multivalued quantum logic circuits by elementary gates

Yao-Min Di, Hai‐Rui Wei

We propose the generalized controlled $X$ (gcx) gate as the two-qudit elementary gate, and based on Cartan decomposition, we also give the one-qudit elementary gates. Then we discuss the physical implementation of these elementary gates and show that it is feasible with current technology. With these elementary gates many important qudit quantum gates can be synthesized conveniently. We provide efficient methods for the synthesis of various kinds of controlled qudit gates and greatly simplify the synthesis of existing generic multi-valued quantum circuits. Moreover, we generalize the quantum Shannon decomposition (QSD), the most powerful technique for the synthesis of generic qubit circuits, to the qudit case. A comparison of ququart ($d=4$) circuits and qubit circuits reveals that using ququart circuits may have an advantage over the qubit circuits in the synthesis of quantum circuits.

Implementation of CNOT and Toffoli gates with higher-dimensional spaces

Wen‐Qiang Liu, Hai‐Rui Wei, L. C. Kwek

Minimizing the number of necessary two-qubit gates is an important task in quantum information processing. By introducing non-computational quantum states in auxiliary spaces, we construct effective circuits for the controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate and the n-control-qubit Toffoli gate with (2n-1) qubit-qudit gates and (2n-2) single-qudit gates. We propose the polarization CNOT and Toffoli gates based on the designed quantum circuits in linear optics by operating on the spatial-mode degree of freedom of photons. Our optical schemes can be achieved with a higher success probability and no extra auxiliary photons are needed.

Elementary gates for ternary quantum logic circuit

Yao-Min Di, Hai‐Rui Wei

In this article the elementary gates for ternary quantum logic circuit are studied. We propose the ternary controlled X (TCX) gate or ternary controlled Z (TCZ) gate as two-qutrit elementary gate, which is universal when assisted by arbitrary one-qutrit gates. It is primitive, efficient and easy to implement. Based on Cartan decomposition, we also give the one-qutrit elementary gates. Then the synthesis of some important ternary gates is investigated and the scheme of physical implementation for these ternary gates is discussed. Finally we extend these elementary gates to more general qudit case, so it provides a unified description for the synthesis of the binary and multi-valued quantum circuits.
