Estimation of nuclear spin state in a double quantum dot via hyperfine interaction

Abstract

Hyperfine interaction of electron spins with nuclear spins, in coupled double quantum dots is studied. Results of successive electron spin measurements exhibit bunching due to correlations induced via the nuclear spins. Further nuclear spins can be purified via conditional electron spin measurements which lead to electron spin revivals in the conditional probabilities. The electron spin coherence time can be extended via conditional measurements. The results are extended to a single electron on a single QD.

Electron spin dynamics and hyperfine interaction in coupled quantum dots

Özgür Çakır, T. Takagahara

We have investigated the quantum dynamics of the electron-nuclei coupled system in a double quantum dot and discovered a couple of new phenomena related to the quantum nature of nuclear spin system. Especially, the bunching of results of the electron spin measurements and the revival in the conditional probabilities are salient features of quantum dynamics. The underlying mechanism is the squeezing of the nuclear spin state through the electron spin measurements. This squeezing is expected to lead to the elongation of the electron spin coherence time. Spin Dynamics of Electron Nuclei Coupled System in a Double Quantum Dot

Özgür Çakır, T. Takagahara

Electron‐nuclei coupled system in a double quantum dot is studied. As a manifestation of quantum nature of nuclear spins, bunching of results of electron spin measurements, and revivals in the conditional probabilities are predicted. The underlying mechanism is the correlations between successive measurements induced via the nuclear spins. The electron spin coherence time can be extended via conditional measurements.

Quantum dynamics in electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots: Bunching, revival, and quantum correlation in electron-spin measurements

Özgür Çakır, T. Takagahara

We investigate quantum dynamics in the electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots and clarify the fundamental features of quantum correlation induced via successive electron-spin measurements. This quantum correlation leads to interesting phenomena such as the bunching of outcomes in the electron-spin measurements and the revival of an arbitrary initial electron-spin state. The nuclear spin system is also affected by the quantum correlation and is, in fact, squeezed via conditional measurements or postselection. This squeezing is confirmed by calculating the increase in the purity of the nuclear spin system. Thus, the successive electron-spin measurements provide a probabilistic method to squeeze the nuclear spin system. These new features are predicted not only for the case of double quantum dots occupied by a pair of electrons but also for the case of a single quantum dot occupied by a single electron or a pair of electrons.

Decoherence and fidelity of single-electron spin states in quantum dots: effects of nuclear hyperfine coupling and double occupancy

A. K. Rajagopal, S. D. Mahanti, Sudhanshu Shekhar Jha

The decoherence and fidelity of spin states in a localized single-electron quantum dot in the presence of a dc magnetic field, arising either from the nuclear hyperfine interaction within the dot or due to its coupling with another localized quantum dot, are examined in detail. A general framework for determining the time evolution of the reduced density matrix. for a single dot is presented, which is exact up to the second order in interaction with any reservoir. In particular, it is applied to the problem of nuclear hyperfine coupling, and approximate estimates of coherence decay time are made when the nuclear spins are either polarized or unpolarized and the internal dynamics of nuclear spins is determined mainly by the nuclear magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. The fidelity of a pure unperturbed electronic one-qubit spin state is obtained as a function of time, which is exact even on a very short timescale of logic gate operations. The time variation of the fidelity of the same one-qubit state on the localized dot as a part of the direct product with another one-qubit state on another localized dot arising because of coupling between these quantum dots is also calculated in this paper. In this case, we include both the single-particle tunnelling between the dots as well as the direct and exchange Coulomb interactions, including on-site Coulomb repulsion. This allows for the double occupation of a single dot. It is found that the loss of fidelity of such two-qubit states due to double occupancy and additional phase errors in the presence of appreciable dot-dot coupling can become a more severe limiting factor than that due to the hyperfine interaction in individual dots.

Hyperfine interaction induced decoherence of electron spins in quantum dots

Wenxian Zhang, V. V. Dobrovitski, K. A. Al-Hassanieh +2 more

We investigate in detail, using both analytical and numerical tools, the decoherence of electron spins in quantum dots (QDs) coupled to a bath of nuclear spins in magnetic fields or with various initial bath polarizations, focusing on the longitudinal relaxation in low and moderate field and polarization regimes. An increase of the initial polarization of nuclear-spin bath has the same effect on the decoherence process as an increase of the external magnetic field, namely, the decoherence dynamics changes from smooth decay to damped oscillations. This change can be observed experimentally for a single QD and for a double-QD setup. Our results indicate that substantial increase of the decoherence time requires very large bath polarizations, and the use of other methods (dynamical decoupling or control of the nuclear spins distribution) may be more practical for suppressing decoherence of QD-based qubits.

Hyperfine induced electron spin and entanglement dynamics in double quantum dots: The case of separate baths

B. Erbe, John Schliemann

We consider a system of two strongly coupled electron spins in zero magnetic field, each of which is interacting with an individual bath of nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction. Applying the long-spin approximation that we introduced in a previous paper [Europhys. Lett. 95, 47009 (2011)] (here each bath is replaced by a single long spin), we numerically study the electron spin and entanglement dynamics. We demonstrate that the decoherence time is scaling with the bath size according to a power law. As expected, the decaying part of the dynamics decreases with increasing bath polarization. However, surprisingly it turns out that, under certain circumstances, combining quantum dots of different geometry to the double dot setup has a very similar effect on the magnitude of the spin decay. Finally, we show that even for a comparatively weak exchange coupling the electron spins can be fully entangled.
