Generation of harmonics treated by a new integral equation method

Abstract

We derive a new integral equation for the nonperturbative evaluation of transition matrix elements of multiphoton processes at high laser field intensities. Our approach to the problem is partly based on the use of the Kramers–Henneberger transformation. As a specific example, we apply our method to the generation of harmonics by an electron in a short range potential, supporting a single bound state. We evaluate the rates R2m+1 for the odd harmonics created in this process for a set of specifically chosen parameters and we compare our results with presently available experimental data.

High-Order Harmonic Generation in the Ionization Process

Jing Chen, Chen Shi–gang, Liu Jie

Based on the nonperturbative quantum electrodynamics scattering theory for multiphoton ionization developed recently, high-order harmonic generated in the ionization process is discussed. The influence of the Coulomb potential is treated as a perturbation in the expansion of the transition matrix. It is deduced that the harmonic photons are emitted in the resonant process during ionization and the width of the harmonic peaks is just the ionization rate of the atom.

Prospects of odd and even harmonic generation by an atom in a high-intensity laser field

Anna V. Bogatskaya, E A Volkova, A M Popov

Abstract A new approach for studying the spontaneous emission of an atomic system in the presence of a high-intensity laser field is used to study the process of harmonic generation. The analysis is based on consideration of quantum system interaction, with the quantized field modes being in the vacuum state, while the intense laser field is considered to be classically beyond perturbation theory. The numerical analysis of the emission from the single one-electron 1D atom irradiated by the femtosecond laser pulse of a Ti:Sa laser is discussed. It is demonstrated that not only odd, but also even harmonics can be emitted if the laser field is strong enough. The origin of the appearance of even harmonics is studied. The obtained results are compared with those found in the framework of the semiclassical approach that is widely used to study harmonic generation. It is found that the semiclassical approach is inapplicable in the strong-field limit.

Theory of multiphoton processes for atoms and ions

Bo Gao

In the first part of this thesis, a new variational principle is presented for the calculation of perturbative transition amplitudes of any order but free from any singularities. Applications are made to the multiphoton ionization and harmonic generation for atomic hydrogen. Its formulations in hyperspherical coordinates as well as in Hartree-Fock representation are also presented. In the second part of this thesis, theories for multiphoton detachment in a static electric or magnetic field are developed. They are based on the analytic solutions of an electron in the combined field of a laser and a static electric or magnetic field, and, therefore, are nonperturbative in both the laser intensity and the static electric or magnetic field strength. Heretofore unexpected cyclotron resonances, which are due to the infinite range character of the electron-photon coupling induced by the external magnetic field, are shown to exist under certain conditions.

Quantum Optical Aspects of High-Harmonic Generation

Sándor Varró

The interaction of electrons with strong laser fields is usually treated with semiclassical theory, where the laser is represented by an external field. There are analytic solutions for the free electron wave functions, which incorporate the interaction with the laser field exactly, but the joint effect of the atomic binding potential presents an obstacle for the analysis. Moreover, the radiation is a dynamical system, the number of photons changes during the interactions. Thus, it is legitimate to ask how can one treat the high order processes nonperturbatively, in such a way that the electron-atom interaction and the quantized nature of radiation be simultaneously taken into account? An analytic method is proposed to answer this question in the framework of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics. As an application, a quantum optical generalization of the strong-field Kramers-Heisenberg formula is derived for describing high-harmonic generation. Our formalism is suitable to analyse, among various quantal effects, the possible role of arbitrary photon statistics of the incoming field. The present paper is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Fritz Ehlotzky, who had significantly contributed to the theory of strong-field phenomena over many decades.

Ellipticity dependence of harmonic generation in atomic hydrogen

Emine Meşe, R. M. Potvliege

The dependence on the ellipticity of the incident laser field of the harmonics generated by atoms of hydrogen in the multiphoton regime is examined for two fundamental wavelengths, 532 and 1064 nm. The single atom response is calculated nonperturbatively using the Floquet method in conjunction with basis sets of complex Sturmian functions. The results are compared with those obtained using lowest order perturbation theory. Nonperturbative effects modify the strength and polarization of the harmonics at the highest intensities investigated, particularly, for the threshold harmonics and in the vicinity of Stark-shift-induced resonances. No anomalous dependence of the rate of harmonic generation on the ellipticity of the fundamental field is found.

Lippmann-Schwinger description of multiphoton ionization

Igor A. Ivanov, Anatoli S. Kheifets

We outline a formalism and develop a computational procedure to treat the process of multiphoton ionization (MPI) of atomic targets in strong laser fields. We treat the MPI process nonperturbatively as a decay phenomenon by solving a coupled set of the integral Lippmann-Schwinger equations. As basic building blocks of the theory, we use a complete set of field-free atomic states, discrete and continuous. This approach should enable us to provide both the total and differential cross sections of MPI of atoms with one and two electrons. As an illustration, we apply the proposed procedure to a simple model of MPI from a square-well potential and to the hydrogen atom.
