Single-photon filtering by a cavity quantum electrodynamics system

Abstract

The nonlinear dynamics of a classical photon pulse in a cavity-QED system is investigated theoretically. It is shown that this system can work as a single-photon filter, which drastically suppresses the multiple-photon probability of the output. The output photon statistics is sensitive to the input pulse length. A suitable choice of pulse length produces a photon pulse with the single-photon probability of 0.32, while the multiple-photon probability is suppressed to 0.01.

TWO-PHOTON NONLINEAR INTERACTION MEDIATED BY CAVITY QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS SYSTEMS

Kazuki Koshino, Hajime Ishihara

Exploiting the field-amplification effect of a cavity, the possibility of optical nonlinearity by only two photons was indicated experimentally. In the present article, we review our recent analysis of the two-photon dynamics in a cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system. Since a cavity-QED system is highly dispersive around its resonances, the shapes of photonic pulses are significantly deformed through interaction with the system. Thus, the present analysis is based on a formalism beyond single-mode approximations. The external photon field is treated rigorously as a continuum, which enables us to handle the two-photon wavefunction in the space representation. The degree of optical nonlinearity in a two-photon state is quantified by comparing the output wavefunction with the linear output wavefunction. It is revealed that the semiclassical optical response theory can be applied for evaluation of the two-photon optical nonlinearity. The two-photon nonlinearity appears not purely as a phase shift in the output wavefunction. The degradation of the fidelity between the output wavefunction and the linear output wavefunction always occurs, which hinders the application of this nonlinear effect as a quantum phase gate. The optimum condition for maximizing the two-photon nonlinearity is clarified, suggesting that pulse shape control is more essential than the Q-value control of the cavity QED system.

Analysis of a Single-Photon Generator Implemented by a Microtoroidal Cavity QED System

Kazuki Koshino, Takao Aoki

We theoretically investigated single-photon generation by using a cavity QED system composed of a quantum dot, a toroidal cavity and a tapered fiber. Assuming that the excitation pulse has an exponential temporal profile, we derived formulas to calculate the photon statistics of the emitted pulse in the fiber. It is shown that the present system functions as an ideal single-photon source under practical parameters of toroidal cavity QED, by applying to the dot a π-pulse whose length is less than the radiative lifetime of the dot.

Deterministic generation of a bit-stream of single-photon pulses

C. K. Law, Harry J. Kimble

We report a high efficiency scheme for generating a single-photon state transmitted out of an optical cavity. For realistic cavity QED parameters, we show that the scheme can produce a single-photon pulse with a probability exceeding 99% in a user-specified time interval. By recycling the system, the scheme can be used to create a bit-stream of single-photon pulses.

Two-photon blockade in a cascaded cavity-quantum-electrodynamics system

Qian Bin, Xin‐You Lü, Shang-Wu Bin +1 more

We investigate theoretically the model of a cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (QED) system that consists of two two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity in the weak coupling regime, where the system is driven by quantum light. The dynamics behavior of the entire system is tackled in the framework of a cascaded quantum system. We find that the two-photon blockade with two-photon bunching and three-photon antibunching can be obtained even when the strong system dissipation is included. This result shows that our work has potential for realizing entangled photon pairs in a weakly coupled cavity. Moreover, we also analyze the photon statistics of the system in the case of out-of-resonance coupling between cavity and two nonidentical atoms. Here, an unconventional photon blockade effect with suppression of two-photon correlation and enhancement of three-photon correlation can be realized, which shows many quantum statistical characteristics of a cavity QED system in weak coupling.

Deterministic Single-Photon Generation by Cavity QED

Kazuhiro Hayasaka

Deterministic generation of single photons is an essential ingredient for quantum information experiments. Controlled emission of single photons into a cavity mode with high efficiency is proposed using a coupled system of an atom and a cavity. This paper reports theoretical discussions on single-photon generation by cavity quantum electrodynamics (Cavity QED) as well as recent progress in experiments with atoms and ions.
