Abstract

We present small modal area Surface Plasmon waveguides, with low group velocities over unusually large bandwidths. Also, we show how Electro-magnetically Induced Transparency materials, inserted into microcavities, enable optical non-linearities at single photon power levels.

Study of optical microcavities with electromagnetically induced transparency for developing new photonic devices

Jorge L. Arce-Diego, Félix Fanjul-Vélez, D. Pereda-Cubián +1 more

All optical devices based on nonlinear effects that use low-level power pumping acquire a great importance in optical communications systems and photonic processing. These optical devices can be implemented by means of different structures and materials. For instance, Fabry-Perot vertical microcavities, whispering gallery based microcavities or hybrid system of photonic crystal microcavities can improve their performance and so make possible a real implementation. In this research work we review the properties of optical media with three-level systems in which electromagnetically induced transparency has been induced. We analyse the effect of including such kind of material in an optical microcavity of the order of wavelenghts. Transmission properties like as the quality factor, the peak of transmission, the power of the coupling field in these microcavities with very small volume and very high non-linear Kerr coefficients will be analysed. Their application for developing new all-optical photonic devices for the next generation of all-optical networks, optical packets switching networks, and quantum information processing will be presented.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in microcavities

Marin Soljacic A, Elefterios Lidorikis, John D. Joannopoulos +1 more

Using detailed numerical simulations, and analytical theory, we study properties of micro-cavities which incorporate materials that exhibit Electro-magnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) or Ultra Slow Light (USL). We find that such systems, while being miniature in size (order wavelength), and integrable, can have some outstanding properties. In particular, they could have lifetimes orders of magnitude longer than other existing systems, and could exhibit non-linear all-optical switching at single photon power levels. Potential applications include miniature atomic clocks, and all-optical quantum information processing.

Nonlinear optics and quantum entanglement of ultra-slow photons

Mikhail D. Lukin, Ataç İmamoğlu

Summary form only given. Exciting observations of ultra-slow group velocities and very large nonlinearities in coherently driven atomic media open up interesting prospectives for nonlinear optical processes at low light levels. Recent experiments, for instance, demonstrated that very efficient nonlinear phenomena can be induced by laser fields of tiny energies. These developments stimulate the studies of ultimate efficiency limits for nonlinear optics based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) as well as its possible applications for generation and manipulation of quantum entangled states of the light fields and matter. We describe a particular method that allows for two slow light fields of energies corresponding to that of a single photon to interact coherently.

Rituraj Rituraj, Meir Orenstein, Shanhui Fan

We study the interaction of a single surface plasmon polariton with a finite number of atoms and with an infinite atomic lattice. Using only two-level atoms, we achieve subscattering, superscattering, and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT).
