Abstract

Effects of a random magnetic field on the phase transition of the spherical model in d space-dimensions are investigated by n->0 technique of the n-times replicated Hamiltonian. The critical temperature T, (fl.o, d) as a function of the strength fl.o of the radom field and the space dimensions d is obtained. It is shown that any critical exponent of this system is equal to that of (d-2)-dimensional pure system for sufficiently close to T,.The crossover effect from d-dimensional behavior to (d-2)-dimensional behavior is discussed. The equation of state and the universal amplitude are also obtained.

Phase Transitions in Gaussian Random Fields. II: Ferromagnets in d = 4 + Formula Space Dimensions

Fumihiko Tanaka

Critical behaviors of a ferromagnetic spin system under quenched random magnetic fields are investigated near above four space dimensions. Critical temperature Tc(m, µ, ε) as a function of the number of spin components m(≥2) and strength µ of the random field is obtained in a power series of ε ≡ d-4 (>0) by means of the Migdal-Polyakov renormalization group theory. Critical exponents ν and η are also calculated in powers of ε. It is shown that they are in agreement with those of (2 + ε)-dimensional pure system for sufficiently close to Tc. In the limit m→∞, present results reduce to d = 4 + ε case of our previous results for the spherical model.

A Quantum d -Dimensional Random-Field XY Ferromagnet

Yu‐qiang Ma

We propose a soluble quantum spherical XY ferromagnet with a random field in the boson space. We obtain a general expression of the critical temperature below which the ordered ferromagnet phase appears. The Imry–Ma result concerning the lower critical dimension is recovered, and the critical exponents near the critical temperature are calculated. We show that the random-field fluctuations rather than the quantum fluctuations dominate the phase transition and critical behavior of the system. The entropy vanishes as at low temperatures, contrary to the classical spherical model.

Spherical model and quantum phase transitions

V. N. Udodov

Abstract The spherical Berlin-Katz model is considered in the framework of the epsilon expansion in one-dimensional and two-dimensional space. For the two-dimensional and threedimensional cases in this model, an exact solution was previously obtained in the presence of a field, and for the two-dimensional case the critical temperature is zero, that is, a “quantum” phase transition is observed. On the other hand, the epsilon expansion of critical exponents with an arbitrary number of order parameter components is known. This approach is consistent with the scaling paradigm. Some critical exponents are found for the spherical model in one-and twodimensional space in accordance with the generalized scaling paradigm and the ideas of quantum phase transitions. A new formula is proposed for the critical heat capacity exponent, which depends on the dynamic index z, at a critical temperature equal to zero. An expression is proposed for the order of phase transition with a change in temperature (developing the approach of R. Baxter), which also depends on the z index. An interpolation formula is presented for the effective dimension of space, which is valid for both a positive critical temperature and a critical temperature equal to zero. This formula is general. Transitions with a change in the field in a spherical model at absolute zero are also considered.

Random-field effect on the quantum ferromagnetic XY model

Yu‐qiang Ma

The quantum version of the random-field spherical $\mathrm{XY}$ model on a $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice is presented in the boson space, and solved exactly. We recover the Imry-Ma result concerning the lower critical dimension ${d}_{c}=4,$ and calculate the critical exponents near the critical temperature. In particular, we obtain a general phase diagram of the model with arbitrary dimension $d$ when $d>{d}_{c}.$ The ferromagnetic ordering is reduced by quantum fluctuations, and destroyed completely by random-field fluctuations with sufficiently large values of the random-field variance \ensuremath{\sigma}. The entropy and the specific heat vanish as ${T}^{d/2}$ at low temperatures. Since the model is equivalent to a Bose system, we show a superfluid-Mott insulator transition at a critical chemical potential ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{c}.$

Magnetic systems containing quenched, long-range, spherically symmetric impurities

Demetris Nicolaides

Magnetic systems containing randomly distributed fields with long-range correlations, decaying as a power law x−b exhibit new critical behavior at phase transitions in comparison to short-range random systems. When b<d+2, where d is the dimension of space, the critical behavior of the random system is the same as that of the pure one in an effective spatial dimension (b−2).

Critical behavior of the three-dimensional random-field Ising model: Two-exponent scaling and discontinuous transition

Heiko Rieger

In extensive Monte Carlo simulations the phase transition of the random-field Ising model in three dimensions is investigated. The values of the critical exponents are determined via finite-size scaling. For a Gaussian distribution of the random fields it is found that the correlation length \ensuremath{\xi} diverges with an exponent \ensuremath{\nu}=1.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 at the critical temperature and that \ensuremath{\chi}\ensuremath{\sim}${\ensuremath{\xi}}^{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\eta}}}$ with \ensuremath{\eta}=0.50\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 for the connected susceptibility and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathrm{dis}}$\ensuremath{\sim}${\ensuremath{\xi}}^{4\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\eta}}\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}$ with \ensuremath{\eta}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}=1.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 for the disconnected susceptibility. Together with the amplitude ratio A=${\mathrm{lim}}_{\mathit{T}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathit{T}\mathit{c}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathrm{dis}}$/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{2}$(${\mathit{h}}_{\mathit{r}}$/T${)}^{2}$ being close to one this gives further support for a two-exponent scaling scenario implying \ensuremath{\eta}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}=2\ensuremath{\eta}. The magnetization behaves discontinuously at the transition, i.e., \ensuremath{\beta}=0. However, no divergence for the specific heat and in particular no latent heat is found. Also the probability distribution of the magnetization does not show a multipeak structure that would be characteristic for the phase-coexistence at first-order phase-transition points.
