Matrix elements between spin‐bonded functions in a hole‐particle formalism

Abstract

Abstract Closed formulas are given for Hamiltonian matrix elements between spin‐bonded functions in a holeparticle formalism. The derivation is based on Wick's theorem and the use of Jucys diagrams. The final formulas are only slightly more complicated than those for bonded functions in a particle formalism.

A unitary group formulation of many‐body theory: The spin‐shift formalism

Barry Tennant Pickup, Atri Mukhopadhyay

Abstract This paper lays the algebraic foundation of a unitary group approach to many‐body theory. We define a set of second quantized spin‐shift operators which are used to construct spin‐adapted many‐electron configuration functions. We investigate the particle‐hole transformation, normal ordering, and contraction of spin shifts. This gives an orbital Wick's theorem reflecting the permutational structure of the states spanning the irreducible representations of the spatial unitary group. We study the spinless Hamiltonian, and the relationship between spin shifts and unitary group generators.

Particle-hole formulation of the unitary group approach to the many-electron correlation problem. II. Matrix element evaluation

M. J. Boyle, Josef Paldus

Graphical methods of spin algebras are used to derive the expressions for the matrix elements of the total particle-number-conserving operators in the basis of hole-particle states, adapted to the chain $\mathrm{U}({n}^{\ensuremath{'}}+{n}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}})\ensuremath{\supset}\mathrm{U}({n}^{\ensuremath{'}})\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{U}({n}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}})$, where ${n}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ and ${n}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}$ designate dimensions of particle and hole subspaces, respectively. The matrix elements are expressed as a product of segment values, each associated with one orbital level as in the particle formalism, and of an additional segment value, representing a linkage of the hole and particle subspaces. It is shown that the particle formalism segment values can be used throughout except for the link segment, whose possible values are derived. An example of hole-particle bases and of their graphical representations is given and the advantages of the hole-particle formalism in shell-model calculations are outlined. An extension of this formalism to particle-number-nonconserving operators, needed in applications involving the $m\mathrm{p}\ensuremath{-}n\mathrm{h}$ propagators with $m\ensuremath{\ne}n$, $m$, $n=0$, 1, and 2, is discussed.

Quantum chemistry in Fock space. III. Particle-hole formalism

Werner Kutzelnigg

A particle-hole formalism is defined which is consistent with the tensor notation (and the index pairing) of the generators of the unitary group and their many-particle generalization. The corresponding generalized Wick theorem is formulated. The classification of basis operators as ‘‘closed,’’ ‘‘open,’’ ‘‘closed from above,’’ and ‘‘closed from below’’ given previously is extended to the present context. Both the perturbative and nonperturbative construction of effective Fock space Hamiltonians is discussed in the particle-hole formalism, especially for the case that the ‘‘physical vacuum’’ satisfies a Hartree–Fock condition. For the calculations of the correlation energy of the physical vacuum Cizek’s CP-MET is compared formally with the unitary variant, the UNICEP (unitary coupled electron pair) approximation. A simple derivation of Goldstone’s ‘‘linked-cluster expansion’’ is also given.

Practical formulation of the extended Wick’s theorem and the Onishi formula

Luis Miguel Robledo

The extended Wick's theorem for fermion operators, which is used to compute matrix elements of an arbitrary operator between two different quasiparticle vacuums, is reformulated to deal with quasiparticle vacuums expanded in a finite single particle basis not closed under the canonical transformation relating them. A new expression for the overlap of those quasiparticle vacuums is also given.

Matrix elements of a spin-adapted reduced Hamiltonian

Jacek Karwowski, Włodzisław Duch, Carmela Valdemoro

A formalism based on the unitary- and symmetric-group approaches to configuration-interaction methods has been applied to an evaluation of matrix elements of a spin-adapted reduced Hamiltonian (SRH). It has been shown that there is a simple closed-form expression for the matrix elements of the SRH matrices. This formula has been expressed as a linear combination of two-electron integrals with coefficients given as explicit functions of the parameters defining the finite-dimensional Hilbert space (number of orbitals, number of electrons, and the total spin quantum number).

Wick's Theorem for Spin Operators and Its Relation to the Coupled-Fermion Representation

Yung‐Li Wang, S. Shtrikman, Herbert B. Callen

It is shown that Wick's theorem and the linked diagram expansion theorem for S = ½ operators (applied elsewhere by the authors to discuss antiferromagnetic spin waves) can be derived by a direct application of conventional theorems to the coupled-fermion representation of spin operators.
