Abstract

We describe our theoretical and experimental results demonstrating two new techniques for manipulating dispersion in quantum interferometry using spectral and spatial properties of optical entanglement. First, we present a novel interferometer design allowing to demonstrate a new effect of simultaneous even- and odd-order spectral dispersion cancellation in a single experiment using entangled photons with frequency anti-correlated spectrum. Second, we for the first time demonstrate a spatial counterpart of the known quantum dispersion cancellation that leads to the removal of a detrimental effect of spatial aberrations. We discuss potential applications of novel technologies in high-resolution optical measurement and for designing aberration-free imaging schemes.

Even-Order Aberration Cancellation in Quantum Interferometry

Cristian Bonato, Alexander V. Sergienko, Bahaa E. A. Saleh +2 more

We report the first experimental demonstration of even-order aberration cancellation in quantum interferometry. The effect is a spatial counterpart of the spectral group velocity dispersion cancellation, which is associated with spectral entanglement. It is manifested in temporal interferometry by virtue of the multiparameter spatial-spectral entanglement. Spatially entangled photons, generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion, were subjected to spatial aberrations introduced by a deformable mirror that modulates the wave front. We show that only odd-order spatial aberrations affect the quality of quantum interference.

Classical dispersion-cancellation interferometry

Kevin J. Resch, P. Puvanathasan, Jeff S. Lundeen +2 more

Even-order dispersion cancellation, an effect previously identified with frequency-entangled photons, is demonstrated experimentally for the first time with a linear, classical interferometer. A combination of a broad bandwidth laser and a high resolution spectrometer was used to measure the intensity correlations between anti-correlated optical frequencies. Only 14% broadening of the correlation signal is observed when significant material dispersion, enough to broaden the regular interferogram by 4250%, is introduced into one arm of the interferometer.

Odd- and Even-Order Dispersion Cancellation in Quantum Interferometry

We describe a novel effect involving odd-order dispersion cancellation. We demonstrate that odd- and even-order dispersion cancellation may be obtained in different regions of a single quantum interferogram using frequency-anticorrelated entangled photons and a new type of quantum interferometer. This offers new opportunities for quantum communication and metrology in dispersive media.

Here we introduce a new quantum-optical tool for dispersion management. This technique allows for simultaneous observation of quantum cancellation of odd-order and even-order dispersion using frequency-anticorrelated entangled photons.
