Validity of the long-wavelength approximation applied to a superlattice on a nonlinear substrate

Abstract

Optical bistability in superlattice structures on a nonlinear substrate is studied theoretically using an attenuated total-reflection configuration. It is shown that even up to Λ/λ ≅ 0.2 (where Λ is the period of the superlattice and λ is the radiation wavelength) the superlattice structure and its equivalent (in the long-wavelength limit) anisotropic layer have almost identical nonlinear behavior although the linear properties may differ significantly.

Optical multistability in nonlinear superlattices with very thin layers

V.M. Agranovich, С. А. Киселев, D. L. Mills

We consider the theory of transmission of electromagnetic radiation through a superlattice of finite length, in which the size of the unit cell is small compared to an optical wavelength. One film in each unit cell is assumed to exhibit an optical nonlinearity of Kerr form. We show that a slow spatial modulation of the thickness of the layers leads to a structure with a low threshold for optical bistability.

Exact results on optical bistability with surface plasmons in layered media

G. S. Agarwal, Subhasish Dutta Gupta

Optical bistability with surface plasmons in layered structures on a nonlinear substrate is studied using Leung's exact results for the nonlinear p-polarized surface waves. Explicit results for the bistable behavior of the reflected field are given for two different geometries involving excitation of short-range and long-range surface plasmons. The excitation of long-range plasmons results in a much lower bistability threshold.

Optical bistability in semiconductor periodic structures

Jian‐Jun He, Michael Čada

A theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs/AlAs superlattices is presented. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in this case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.>

Optical bistability using prism-coupled, long-range surface plasmons

Robert K. Hickernell, Dror Sarid

We consider an attenuated total reflection prism-coupling geometry used to excite surface-plasmon waves along a metal film, bounded by a substrate with an intensity-dependent dielectric constant. Nonlinear wave theory is developed in the infinite incident plane-wave approximation, assuming a dielectric constant proportional to the square of the electric field normal to the film. We calculate the intensity required to observe bistability in the reflected intensity by excitation of the nonlinear, long-range surface plasmon and find it to be 2 orders of magnitude less than that required for the nonlinear, single-surface plasmon. We compare the nonlinear wave analysis with other approaches and illustrate the effects of the sign of the nonlinearity and of a nonlinear coupling layer.

Bistable optical behavior of a nonlinear attenuated total reflection device: Resonant excitation of nonlinear guided modes

R. Reinisch, P. Arlot, Guy Vitrant +1 more

We study the prism excitation of a nonlinear waveguide. The nonlinear medium is the substrate which exhibits Kerr effect. Our results show that such a device experiences optical bistability. We also show that there exists a close link between optical bistability and resonant excitation of nonlinear guided modes propagating along this nonlinear waveguide.

Optical bistability in a two-dimensional nonlinear superlattice

Bin Xu, Nai‐Ben Ming

Based on our theoretical results of dynamical behaviors of light transmission in optical superlattices, we show that there is a new type of optical bistable mechanism, i.e., the index-modulation mechanism, existing in a two-dimensional superlattice that contains dielectric nonlinearity of the Kerr form. This bistable mechanism is not exhibited in one-dimensional superlattices.
