Optical bistability and differential amplification in nonlinear fiber resonators

Abstract

Optical bistability and differential amplification, arising as a consequence of the nonlinear Kerr effect in fiber resonators, are considered in the present paper. A structure-independent transfer matrix method devised for linear operation is extended to account for nonlinear self-phase effects. General expressions are presented and applied to particular cases showing complete agreement with previously published results.>

Optical bistablity and differential amplification in coupled nonlinear microcavity resonators

Ying Lu, Jianquan Yao, Yizhong Yu +1 more

We present a theoretical study of optical bistability and differential amplification, arising as a consequence of the nonlinear Kerr effect in mutually coupled nonlinear microcavity resonators. The dependence of the bistability and differential amplification on various parameters of the coupling range and the resonators is investigated. Multiple closely spaced bistability of the internal intensity in the microresonator is found with appropriate parameters. The results may be useful for a complex logic, memory or switch operation system.

Low Threshold Optical Bistability and Differential Amplification using a Fiber Amplifier in a Nonlinear Ring Resonator

Miguel A. Muriel, Francisco Javier Fraile-Pelaez, J. Capmany

Optical fiber ring resonators using directional couplers as signal tapping elements are called to play an important role in the future all-optical communication and sensor networks. The possibility of obtaining a wide range of strutures capable of performing wide-band signal processing operations in a guided-wave format has attracted the interest of several research groups. Initial effort focused on structures operating under linear regime showing and demonstrating potential applications as fiber sensors [1], all-fiber lasers [2], Fabry-Perot and Mach-Zehnder interferometers [3], [4], and optical filters for WDM and OFDM [5].

Kerr bistability in optical fiber loop resonators with a 3 × 3 fiber coupler

Y. H. Ja

Abstract A theoretical study of bistability caused by the Kerr effect in two types of optical fiber loop resonators connected to a 3 × 3 coupler is carried out. The dependence of the bistability on various parameters of the fiber and the coupler is investigated and presented as graphs. The bistability offers the possibility of using these fiber loop resonators as optical logic gates, memories, switches, and differential amplifiers. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.

Transient analysis of a nonlinear fiber ring resonator

Francisco Javier Fraile-Pelaez, Miguel Prol, David J. Santos +1 more

In this letter we study the transient behavior of a nonlinear fiber ring resonator operating both as an optical bistable and as a differential amplifier. The speed of response of the structure is investigated, and some general considerations on the performance of these kinds of devices are presented.

Kerr bistability in a 3 × 3 coupler optical fiber ring resonator

Y. H. Ja

We present a theoretical study of bistability in an optical fiber ring resonator connected to a 3 × 3 fiber coupler. The bistability is caused by the Kerr effect when the ring resonator is working in the nonlinear regime. The dependence of the bistability on various parameters of the fiber and the coupler is investigated.

Nonlinear optical fiber resonator: Optical fiber bistability

Yuancheng Zhang, Qian Song

The linear and nonlinear charecteristics of verious optical fiber loop resonators have been processed uniformly using transmission matrix method. It is pointed that in nonlinear operation condition each of those optical fiber loop resonators may be used to make an all-optical fiber bistability device. The configuration, charecterictics and threshold of verious Er-doped fiber loop bistability devices have been calculated, analysised and compared, and the design principle of those devices has been given.
