Abstract

A simple scheme for the generation of two different classes of bidimensional vibrational Schrödinger cat-like states of an isotropically trapped ion is presented. We show that by appropriately adjusting an easily controllable parameter having a clear physical meaning, the states prepared by our procedure are quantum superpositions of either vibrational axial angular momentum eigenstates or Fock states along two orthogonal directions.

A scheme for generating quantum superpositions of macroscopically distinguishable states of the vibrational motion of a bidimensionally trapped ion is reported. Preparation of motional macroscopic quantum-interference states of a trapped ion

Shi‐Biao Zheng

We propose a scheme for generating macroscopic quantum-interference (Schr\"odinger-cat) states of the motion of a trapped ion. In the scheme, a trapped ion is driven by two laser beams tuned to the first lower and upper vibrational sidebands, respectively. Under certain conditions, the detection of the internal state of the ion leaves the vibrational motion in a coherent state superposition. The scheme can be easily generalized to prepare other kinds of cat states.

Vibrational pair cat states

Shih-Chuan Gou, Jörg Steinbach, P. L. Knight

We propose a scheme for generating mesoscopic superpositions of two distinguishable pair coherent states of motion in a two-dimensional ion trap. In our scheme, the trapped ion is excited bichromatically by five laser beams along different directions in the X-Y plane of the ion trap. Four of these have the same frequency and can be derived from the same source, reducing the demands on the experimentalist. We show that if the initial vibrational state is given by a two-mode Fock state, as demonstrated in recent experiments, these highly correlated two-mode ``Schr\"odinger cat'' states are realized when the system reaches its steady state, which is indicated by the extinction of the fluorescence emitted by the ion. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Preparation of multicomponent cat states of the motion of a trapped ion by a single conditional measurement

Shi‐Biao Zheng

A scheme is proposed for preparing superpositions of many equidistant coherent states on a circle for the motion of an ion in an anisotropic two-dimensional trap, in which the ion is tightly bound in the y direction. In the scheme the ion is excited by one laser field in the x direction and then by two laser fields propagating along the x and y directions alternately many times. Then a state-selective measurement on the ion is made, which collapses the vibrational motion to a coherent state superposition.

A QND measurement scheme for generating nonclassical states of a 2D trapped ion

A simple and novel scheme for generating vibrational pair coherent states (PCS) of a 2D trapped ion is presented. Our procedure requires a two-level ion confined in a bidimensional harmonic potential and drived by two carrier resonant laser beams appropriately configured. We show that the existence of Rabi frequency degeneration characterizing our system, is at the origin of the possibility of generating PCS.

Preparation of superpositions of SU(2) coherent states of the motion of a trapped ion.

A scheme is presented for the generation of superpositions of two two-mode SU(2) coherent states of the motion for a trapped ion. In the scheme an ion is trapped in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic potential and driven by two resonant laser beams. Under certain conditions, the motional two-mode SU(2) cat state can be generated after a conditional measurement on the internal state following the ion-laser interaction.
