Abstract

Properties of the resonance peaks associated with the non-degenerate four-wave mixing signal in a two-level molecular system with non-zero permanent dipole moments are studied in the space defined by the pump ( omega 1 ) and probe ( omega 2 ) frequencies. An analytical expression for the Fourier components of the nonlinear homogeneous macroscopic polarization are obtained, where the terms responsible for the oscillation (at frequency omega 3 =2 omega 1 - omega 2 ) of the populations and coherences are also identified. Topological properties of the resulting nonlinear spectra are studied in frequency space using three-dimensional curves and contour plots. We have additionally identified the dominant contributions of the coherence and/or population that determine the intensity and the spectral linewidth. The critical quantities for the present analysis are the transition and permanent dipole moments when the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is not considered.

Effects of permanent dipole moments in transient four-wave mixing experiments

J. P. Lavoine

A two-pulse degenerate four-wave mixing experiment is analyzed in the case where the medium under investigation can be modeled by two-level systems having unequal permanent dipole moments. By modeling the light pulses by double exponentials [exp(-Gamma/t/)], we give an analytical expression of the third-order nonlinear polarization of the medium. We apply this result to simulate the measured signal in such experiment. We show that in the case of a two-photon transition, a signal can be detected if the pump pulse interacts with the medium before the probe pulse contrary to what is observed for excitations in the resonance region. An attempt to explain this behavior is made and the detected signal is analyzed in terms of pure coherent processes. This effect appears as a signature of the presence of permanent dipole moments. To test this property on a more realistic system, we then have considered a one-dimensional frequency-selected infrared degenerate four-wave mixing experiment on a molecular anharmonic vibrational mode modeled by a Morse potential and coupled to a dissipative bath of harmonic oscillators. We show that the two-photon transitions allowed by the presence of permanent dipole moments enable to analyze the multilevel system dynamics as if they were the one of a two-level system. Our results can also be extended to the case of inhomogeneous broadening and are of interest to study the infrared photon-echo response of anharmonic vibrational modes.

Four-wave mixing signal intensity: Relaxation time effects on the absorptive and dispersive optical properties in a two-level system

José Luis Paz, Luis G. Rodríguez, César Costa Vera

A study of the effects of relaxation times on the Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) signal response in frequency space for a two-level system is presented where the collisional effects of the solvent and the presence of the electromagnetic field are considered. The model is a generalization of the conventional two-level approach in that it includes a simplified description of the molecular structure associated with the non-zero permanent dipole moments. Significant changes in both the FWM-intensity and nonlinear optical properties are observed, due mainly to changes in the ratio between the longitudinal and transversal relaxation times.

Nonlinear absorption and dispersion in a two-level system with permanent dipole moments

Raanan Bavli, Y. B. Band

We calculate the third-order nonlinear absorption and dispersion (self-phase-modulation and cross-phase modulation) of a homogeneously broadened two-level molecular system with permanent dipole moments interacting with (1) an optical field of frequency \ensuremath{\omega}, and (2) two optical fields of frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$ and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{2}$, i.e., the susceptibilities ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$(-\ensuremath{\omega};\ensuremath{\omega},-\ensuremath{\omega},\ensuremath{\omega}) and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$(-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$;${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$,-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{2}$,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{2}$). Sharp features in the nonlinear absorption and dispersion appear whenever one- or two-photon resonance conditions are met. Only features corresponding to one-photon resonance arise if the difference between the permanent dipole moments of the levels, \ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\mu}, vanishes. The ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$(-\ensuremath{\omega};\ensuremath{\omega},-\ensuremath{\omega},\ensuremath{\omega}) spectrum has two features, one at frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{b}\mathit{a}}$ dominated by contributions proportional to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}^{4}$, where ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}$ is the transition dipole moment of the two levels with transition frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{b}\mathit{a}}$, and the other at frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{b}\mathit{a}}$/2 dominated by contributions proportional to (\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\mu}${)}^{2}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}_{\mathit{a}\mathit{b}}^{2}$. Sharp features in ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$(-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$;${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{2}$,-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{2}$,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$) appear when ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{2}$ is near ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{b}\mathit{a}}$,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$,${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$+${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{b}\mathit{a}}$, and \ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{1}$-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathit{b}\mathit{a}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}.

Nonlinear-optical properties of two-level systems with permanent dipole moments

Raanan Bavli, Donald F. Heller, Y. B. Band

We calculate the transition rates and the linear and nonlinear-optical properties of a homogeneously broadened two-level system with permanent dipole moments in the presence of two pump fields. We present absorption and emission spectra for the system in the steady state, without making the rotating-wave approximation. Expressions for the nonlinear susceptibilities for wave mixing are derived.

Theoretical description of two-photon phase conjugation in polar molecules

Claudine Katan, J. P. Lavoine, A. A. Villaeys

Degenerate four-wave-mixing phase conjugation is analyzed in the case of two-photon transitions between levels having unequal dipole moments. The theoretical treatment is based upon a nonperturbative solution of the density matrix and does not require the rotating-wave approximation. We give an analytical expression for the polarization component oscillating at the field frequency for a medium excited by stationary waves. In the weak-probe-beam limit, the contributions in the direction of the probe and conjugated beams are evaluated. For instance, by using this two-photon process, instead of the usual single-photon one which is independent of the permanent dipole moments even in the strong-field limit, it is shown that lower intensities are sufficient to reach higher reflectivities. The influences of the permanent dipole moments, relaxation rates, and field frequency are also discussed.

Effects of permanent dipole moments in degenerate four-wave-mixing processes

J. P. Lavoine, Claudine Katan, A. A. Villaeys

The main goal of this paper is to analyze a two-photon degenerate four-wave-mixing process that occurs in an isotropic media modeled by homogeneously broadened two-level systems having unequal permanent dipole moments and subject to rotational diffusion. Our theoretical treatment is based upon a third-order perturbative solution of the density-matrix equations and does not require the rotating-wave approximation. The medium being excited by three stationary fields, we give an analytical expression of the macroscopic polarization up to the third order, including permanent dipole moments, orientational diffusion, and field polarizations. We apply these general results to the description of a degenerate four-wave-mixing process by selecting, in the expressions, the contributions in the direction ${\mathbf{k}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$-${\mathbf{k}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\beta}}}$+${\mathbf{k}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, ${\mathbf{k}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$, ${\mathbf{k}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\beta}}}$, and ${\mathbf{k}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ being, respectively, the wave vectors of the exciting fields. We show that the two-photon degenerate four-wave mixing is dependent on the permanent dipole moments and is not present if these dipole moments are equal or zero. We analyze the influence of rotational diffusion. Different cases of field polarizations are also considered, and we discuss a comparison of the well-known one-photon degenerate four-wave-mixing process and this two-photon process. This process is also discussed in the particular case of phase conjugation.
