Rabi dynamics of a two-level system in the field of a biharmonic signal

Abstract

The dynamic control of the two-level system has been investigated by influencing the superposition of two pulses of the electromagnetic field, shifted in phase. The effect of the amplitude ratio and relative phase difference between pulses on the probability of exciting the two-level system has been studied. Interference patterns of populations, depending on signal parameters, were formed.

Amplitude and phase effects in Josephson qubits driven by a biharmonic electromagnetic field

Сатанин Аркадий Михайлович, M. V. Denisenko, A. I. Gelman +1 more

We investigate the amplitude and phase effects of qubit dynamics and excited-state population under the influence of a biharmonic control field. It is demonstrated that the biharmonic driving field can have a significant effect on the behavior of quasienergy level crossing as well as on multiphoton transitions. Also, the interference pattern for the populations of qubit excited states is sensitive to the signal parameters. We discuss the possibility of using these effects for manipulating qubit states and calibrating nanosecond pulses.

Probability amplitude dynamics for a two-level system

John K. Boyd

The time-dependent probability amplitudes are determined for a two-level system without invoking the rotating wave approximation. A new analytic solution is obtained in the limit of small ratio of Rabi frequency to driver frequency. An analytic solution is also obtained in the limit of large ratio of Rabi frequency to driver frequency for a restricted range of parameters. The form of this solution guides the selection of parameters that cause substantial changes in the character of the solution. The dependence on parameter values is studied numerically for the transition probability and the coherent spectrum.

Influence of Pulse width and Rabi frequency on the Population dynamics of three-level system in two-photon absorption process

Nam-Chol Kim, Myong-Chol Ko, Song‐Jin Im +1 more

We investigate the population dynamics of the three-level system in the two-photon absorption (TPA) process, mainly focusing the influence of pulse width and Rabi frequency on the population dynamics of the system. We observe the dependency of the population with the Rabi frequency and the pulse width. We also show that the arbitrary superposition state consisted in two states, upper state and lower state, is possible by controlling the pulse width and Rabi frequency. The results obtained can be used to the case of more complex multilevel system and they can be valuable for coherent quantum control in quantum information processing.

Anomalous Rabi Oscillations in Multilevel Quantum Systems

Bo Y. Chang, Ignacio R. Solá, Vladimir S. Malinovsky

We show that the excitation probability of a state within a manifold of levels undergoes Rabi oscillations with the frequency determined by the energy difference between the states and not by the pulse area, for sufficiently strong pulses. The population and coherence remains in the two-level subsystem formed by the initial and target state even at Rabi frequencies exceeding the energy difference. The observed dynamics can be useful in nonlinear spectroscopy and quantum state preparation.

Interaction between a moving atom and an electromagnetic wave

Jingtao Zhang, Chen Zhao-yang, Xu Zhi-Zhan

Dynamics of a two-level atom moving in an electromagnetic field is studied. The atomic motion gives rise to a momentum-dependent detuning which holds back the atomic transition, and leads to a momentum-dependent Rabi oscillation which causes an overlapping among different Rabi oscillations. When the field is in a Fock state, the atomic population and the mean momentum of the atom exhibit damping oscillation, the damping rate is related to the momentum distribution; the collapse-revival phenomena of the atomic population and the mean momentum will occur if the atomic momentum has some special distribution. When the field is in a superposition state, the collapse-revival phenomena are modified by the atomic momentum distribution and disappear for the wider atomic momentum wavepackets. We also find that each atomic level will split into two sublevels with the same energy difference when the field is in a Fock state and the atom has a definite momentum.

Generalization of the Rabi population inversion dynamics in the sub-one-cycle pulse limit

Nađa Došlić

We consider the population inversion in a two-level system generated by a sub-one-cycle pulse excitation. Specifically, we explore the effect that the time derivative of the pulse envelope has on the Rabi dynamics. Our analysis is based on a combination of analytical, perturbative, and nonperturbative treatments and is complemented by numerical simulations. We find a shortening of the Rabi inversion period and show that complete inversion is unobtainable under resonant, ultrashort pulse conditions. The impact of nonresonant and carrier-envelope phase-dependent effects on the dynamics of two-level and multilevel systems is studied numerically, and conditions for complete population inversion are derived.
