Analysis of constant and periodic emission field characteristics of optically pumped three-level lasers

Abstract

Interaction of two coherent fields with a homogeneously broadened three-level system is discussed for both a laser amplifier and laser oscillator under weak field emission. Analytic expressions are obtained to study explicitly the dependence of the amplifier emission characteristics on various pump parameters. These results are used to examine the steady-state and sustained oscillatory emission features of a single-mode laser oscillator. Subsequently, the amplifier analysis is generalized for an arbitrary deenergization to dephasing rate for the three-level system.>

Gain, dispersion, and emission characteristics of three-level molecular laser amplifier and oscillator systems

J. S. Uppal, Robert G. Harrison, Jerome V. Moloney

Interaction of two coherent fields of arbitrary intensity with a general homogeneously broadened three-level molecular system for both an amplifier as well as a laser oscillator under general conditions of pumping is discussed. The amplifier solution is obtained through the time-averaged density-matrix formalism with two coherent fields treated classically. A detailed consideration of both real and imaginary parts of the electric susceptibility at pump and emission frequencies, corresponding to gain and dispersion in the active medium has been taken into account. The results obtained are used to study a number of situations for weak and strong pumping in the laser amplifier. Subsequently these are applied to a mode analysis of a unidirectional single-mode laser oscillator to determine the output characteristics of the laser and to establish conditions under which emission becomes dynamically unstable resulting in sustained oscillatory emission. The results obtained are found to be in good agreement with those of a full numerical analysis of the atomic and field coupled equations describing the system.

Analysis of Steady State and Bistable Emission from a Three-level Laser

J. S. Uppal, Robert G. Harrison, Weiping Lu

A resonantly pumped three-level laser is analysed in a high-Q cavity under conditions of negligible and high pump depletion to obtain expressions for the emission characteristics in analytic form. Under high pump depletion our analysis predicts bistable emission in its steady state behaviour.

Regular and chaotic dynamics of optically pumped molecular lasers

Jerome V. Moloney, W. Forysiak, J. S. Uppal +1 more

We present a detailed analysis of the dynamical behavior of an optically pumped molecular laser. This study combines bifurcation and power spectral analysis with numerical investigation of the global features of attractor topology under control parameter variation. The special role of the pump laser in generating physically distinct periodic and chaotic dynamics is emphasized through the complementary use of laser gain and dispersion characteristics. Our main results are the following: (i) instabilities associated with the physically distinct mechanisms of relaxation and pump-induced Rabi sideband oscillations are readily generated; (ii) the topological characteristics of both periodic and chaotic attractors reflect these physically distinct mechanisms, making it possible to discriminate between both types of behavior in heterodyne power spectra; and (iii) the ratio of deenergization to dipole-dephasing rates is central to determining the operating characteristics of the laser.

Dynamics of an optically pumped three-level laser with pump and generated gaussian beams

Jordi Cortit, R. Corbalán

We study numerically a single-mode homogeneously broadened three-level model for a coherently pumped laser in a ring cavity with pump and generated fields having gaussian transverse profiles. For a range of parameters suitable for a NH3 laser, we find dynamics in the phase space provided that the radius of the pump field is small compared with the beam waist of the generated field. Otherwise, we find that the laser emits a constant intensity output.

Nonlinear dynamics of Raman lasers

Weiping Lu, Robert G. Harrison

Detailed analysis of the steady-state and dynamical unstable behavior of single-mode, homogeneously broadened Raman lasers is presented. Bistable features of the Raman emission and its operating conditions are determined from steady-state analysis. Parametrization of the dynamical behavior shows instabilities to exist over a broad range of operation conditions and for broad cavity detuning to the low-frequency side of the gain center where the bistable emission also prevails. Notably, period-doubling routes to chaos and sustained oscillatory behavior in both intensity and phase are found to occur for both good and bad cavity conditions, the dynamics of the phase revealing additional temporal features to that of intensity.

Interaction of two laser fields with a three-level molecular system

R. L. Panock, Richard J. Temkin

The rate of absorption and emission of radiation is calculated for two laser fields interacting with a homogeneously broadened, three-level molecular system. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is used in the density matrix formalism and the laser fields are treated classically. The laser fields, at frequencies ωpand ωs, are off resonance by δpand δs, respectively, such that|\delta_{p}|, |\delta_{s}| \ll \omega_{p}, \omega_{s}. Analytic expressions are derived for the imaginary part of the electric susceptibility,\chi"(\omega_{p})and\chi"(\omega_{s}). The present work differs from previous calculations in that the laser fields may have arbitrary values of field strength and each field may be on or off resonance. A discussion is presented of the properties of the solutions for\chi"(\omega_{p})and\chi"(\omega_{s}), for both strong and weak laser fields, based on computer evaluation of the general analytic expressions. It is shown that the solutions may be divided into single-photon and two-photon, or Raman, contributions. Conditions for optimizingdI(\omega_{s})/dzand the photon conversion efficiency are derived. These results may be applied to analyzing the pulsed, optically pumped submillimeter laser and to studying two-photon absorption in a gas.
