Spectrum of geometric phases in a driven impact oscillator

Abstract

We study the geometric phases underlying the time evolution of the quantum wavefunction of a driven nonlinear oscillator which exhibits periodic, quasiperiodic as well as chaotic dynamics. In the asymptotic limit, irrespective of the classical dynamics, the geometric phases are found to increase linearly with time. Interestingly, the fingerprints of the classical motion are present in the bounded fluctuations that are superimposed on the monotonically growing phases, as well as in the difference between the geometric phases of two neighbouring quantum states.

Geometric Phase and Classical-Quantum Correspondence

Indubala I. Satija, Radha Balakrishnan

We study the geometric phase factors underlying the classical and the corresponding quantum dynamics of a driven nonlinear oscillator exhibiting chaotic dynamics. For the classical problem, we compute the geometric phase factors associated with the phase space trajectories using Frenet-Serret formulation. For the corresponding quantum problem, the geometric phase associated with the time evolution of the wave function is computed. Our studies suggest that the classical geometric phase may be related to the the difference in the quantum geometric phases between two neighboring eigenstates.

Signatures of Chaos in a Quasiperiodically Driven Quantum Impact Oscillator

Deepshikha Singh, Titir Mukherjee, Soumitro Banerjee

We demonstrate the emergence of quantum-chaotic dynamics in a quasiperiodically driven impact oscillator near the grazing condition. While previous studies of the quantum impact oscillator under periodic driving reported strange nonchaotic dynamics, we show that quasiperiodic driving produces robust signatures of chaos. The corresponding classical system undergoes a sharp grazing-induced transition from quasiperiodic motion to chaos, as established by bifurcation analysis, Lyapunov exponents, Fourier spectra, and the 0-1 test. In the quantum system, Shannon-entropy time series exhibit broadband spectra, 0-1 test values close to unity, and predominantly positive finite-time Lyapunov exponents for both rational and irrational driving-frequency ratios. Independent quantum diagnostics reinforce this result: the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) displays early-time exponential growth with nearly identical rates, while the golden-ratio drive leads to a substantially faster saturation of the OTOC. Fidelity exhibits an exponential decay regime that is approximately independent of perturbation strength. These results establish quasiperiodic driving near grazing as a mechanism for generating quantum-chaotic behavior and reveal that, although the initial onset of scrambling is largely insensitive to frequency-ratio rationality, the subsequent development of global scrambling is strongly influenced by the degree of irrationality of the drive.

Dynamical Chaos in a Dissipative Driven Quantum Soft Impact Oscillator

Titir Mukherjee, Arnab Acharya, Soumitro Banerjee +1 more

Dynamical chaos in a periodically driven, dissipative soft impact oscillator is investigated in the quantum regime using the complex-number quantum Langevin equation (c-number QLE). The averaged system dynamics are analyzed through a comprehensive suite of time-series diagnostics, including bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, Fourier spectra, and the 0-1 test. Systematic variation of the wall position reveals a rich sequence of dynamical transitions and grazing bifurcations, progressing from periodic to multiperiodic motion and culminating in chaotic behavior. These results demonstrate the persistence of impact-induced chaos under quantum dissipation and elucidate how environmental fluctuations influence non-linear dynamics in open quantum systems.

Geometric phases in the simple harmonic and perturbative Mathieu's oscillator systems

JeongHyeong Park, Dae-Yup Song

Geometric phases of simple harmonic oscillator system are studied. Complete sets of "eigenfunctions" are constructed, which depend on the way of choosing classical solutions. For an eigenfunction, two different motions of the probability distribution function (pulsation of the width and oscillation of the center) contribute to the geometric phase which can be given in terms of the parameters of classical solutions. The geometric phase for a general wave function is also given. If a wave function has a parity under the inversion of space coordinate, then the geometric phase can be defined under the evolution of half of the period of classical motions. For the driven case, geometric phases are given in terms of Fourier coefficients of the external force. The oscillator systems whose classical equation of motion is Mathieu's equation are perturbatively studied, and the first term of nonvanishing geometric phase is calculated.

Classical vs quantum dynamics and the onset of chaos in a macrospin system

Haowei Fan, Vladimir Fal'ko, Xiao Li

We study a periodically driven macrospin system with anisotropic long-range interactions and collective dissipation, described by a Lindblad master equation. In the thermodynamic limit ($N\to\infty$), a mean-field treatment yields classical equations of motion, whose dynamics are characterized via the maximal Lyapunov exponent (MLE). Focusing on the thermodynamic limit, we map out chaotic, quasiperiodic, and periodic phases via bifurcation diagrams, MLEs, and Fourier spectra of evolved observables, identifying classic period-doubling bifurcations and fractal boundaries in the regions of attractors. Finite-size quantum simulations in the Dicke basis reveal that while both quantum and classical systems exhibit diverse dynamical phases, finite-size effects suppress some behaviors present in the thermodynamic limit. The sign of $λ_{\mathrm{max}}$ serves as a key indicator of convergence between quantum and classical dynamics, which agree over timescales up to the Lyapunov time. Analysis of the density matrix shows that convergence occurs only when its nonzero elements are sharply localized. However, the nonconvergence does not imply a fundamental difference between quantum and classical dynamics: in chaotic regimes, although the evolution orbits of quantum and classical systems show significant differences, quantum evolution becomes mixed and diffusively explores the Hilbert space, signaling quantum chaos, which can be confirmed by the delocalized nature of the density matrix.

Fingerprints of the quantum space-time in time-dependent quantum mechanics: An emergent geometric phase

Anwesha Chakraborty, Partha Nandi, Biswajit Chakraborty

We show the emergence of Berry phase in a forced harmonic oscillator system placed in the quantum space-time of Moyal type, where the time ‘t’ is also an operator. An effective commutative description of the system gives a time dependent generalised harmonic oscillator system with perturbation linear in position and momentum. The system is then diagonalised to get a generalised harmonic oscillator and then its adiabatic evolution over time-period T is studied in Heisenberg picture to compute the expression of geometric phase-shift.
