Abstract

We investigate the decoherence of polarization-entangled photon pairs distributed over optical fibers with polarization mode dispersion. We characterize system configurations yielding entanglement sudden death and disappearance of non-locality and show the possibility of non-local compensation. Our results establish the ultimate boundaries for fiber-based quantum communications.

Sudden Death of Entanglement Induced by Polarization Mode Dispersion

Cristian Antonelli, Mark Shtaif, Misha Brodsky

We study the decoherence of polarization-entangled photon pairs subject to the effects of polarization mode dispersion, the chief polarization decoherence mechanism in optical fibers. We show that fiber propagation reveals an intriguing interplay between the concepts of entanglement sudden death, decoherence-free subspaces, and nonlocality. We define the boundaries in which entanglement-based quantum communications protocols relying on fiber propagation can be applied.

Disentanglement due to polarization mode dispersion in optical fibers: from nonlocal compensation to entanglement sudden death

Misha Brodsky, Cristian Antonelli, Mark Shtaif

We propagate pairs of polarization-entangled photons through optical fibers with polarization-mode dispersion (PMD). We observe non-local PMD compensation and the transition to sudden death of entanglement when the alignment of the compensating element is varied.

Disappearance of polarization entanglement due to the relative orientation of two fiber's PMD vectors

Misha Brodsky, Cristian Antonelli, Mark Shtaif

We study propagation of polarization-entangled photon pairs through optical fibers with polarization-mode dispersion (PMD). We observe abrupt loss and revival of entanglement as the PMD vector of one fiber rotates relative to the PMD vector of the other fiber.

Propagation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in optical fibers

As polarization-entangled photons traverse through fibers with polarization mode dispersion the degree of their entanglement changes in fascinating ways. We will describe sudden loss and revival of entanglement and also will discuss non-local PMD compensation.

Loss of Polarization Entanglement in Optical Fibers due to Polarization Mode Dispersion

Misha Brodsky, Elizabeth C. George, Cristian Antonelli +1 more

We perform quantum tomography measurements on polarization-entangled photon pairs traversing fibers with birefringence. We find that the entanglement disappears gradually if the birefringence affects only one photon of the pair. A theory supports our observations.
