Interactions of a two-level atom with one mode of correlated two-mode field states

Abstract

We study the interaction of two-level atoms with correlated two-mode states of the quantized electromagnetic field. We assume that only one of the modes is near resonance with the atomic transition so that the second mode does not interact directly with the atom. However, we find that the presence of the second field does produce a kind of nonlocal effect in that if the atom is initially in the excited or the ground state no atomic dipole moment develops. We consider two kinds of correlated field state, namely, the correlated SU(1, 1) coherent states, which are generalizations of the two-mode squeezed vacuum states, and the so-called pair coherent states. We study the atomic inversions and the evolutions of the field statistics and of the squeezing properties of the initial field.

Interaction of a Two-level Atom with One Mode of Anticorrelated Two-mode Field States

Christopher C. Gerry, Jerry Kiefer

We study the time evolution of a single two-level atom interacting with one mode of anticorrelated two-mode field states. The anticorrelated field states are SU(2) coherent states constructed from Schwinger's two-boson representation of the angular momentum algebra. We assume that only one of the modes is near resonance with the atom. Because of the anticorrelation in the initial field state, no atomic moment develops. We study the evolution of the atomic inversion and the inversion and the phase space quasi-probability SU(2) Q-function of the field.

Generation of dipole squeezing in a two-mode system with entangled coherent states of a quantized electromagnetic field

Rui‐Hua Xie, Qin Rao

Two-mode quantized electromagnetic fields can be entangled and admit a large number of coherent states. In this paper, we consider a two-mode system that consists of a two-level atom interacting with a two-mode quantized electromagnetic field, which is initially prepared in an entangled two-mode coherent state, via a nondegenerate two-photon process in a lossless cavity. We study the quantum fluctuations in the two-mode system and investigate in detail the effects of detuning, Stark shift and atomic coherence on atomic dipole squeezing (ADS). We show that ADS strongly depends on the atomic coherence. It is found that the stronger the correlations between the two modes are involved, the more the ADS could be generated. The detuning or Stark shift has a destructive effect on ADS, but the combined effect of the detuning and Stark shift may lead to a regular, periodical and strong ADS pattern.

SQUEEZING OSCILLATIONS OF A QUANTIZED FIELD INTERACTING WITH PAIR OF COLD ATOMS VIA INTENSITY-DEPENDENT COUPLING

V. I. Koroli

We study the interaction between a single-mode electromagnetic field and a pair of indistinguishable two-level atoms via the intensity-dependent coupling. This problem is equivalent to the equidistant three-level atom with equal dipole moment matrix transition elements between the adjacent levels. The exact analytical solution for the atom–field state-vector is obtained assuming that at the initial moment the field is in the Holstein–Primakoff SU (1,1) coherent state. The quantum statistical and squeezing properties of the field are investigated. The results obtained are compared with those for the single two-level atom obtained by Buzek. We observe that the exact periodicity of the field squeezing that takes place in the case of the single two-level atom is violated in the case of the pair of cold atoms. That is, the exact periodicity of the physical quantities can be destroyed only if the radiation field interacts with a system of more than one two-level atom.

TWO-PHOTON QUANTUM-STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SINGLE-MODE CAVITY FIELD INTERACTING WITH A PAIR OF COLD ATOMS

V. I. Koroli

The interaction between the pair of cold two-level atoms and the single-mode cavity field is investigated. The two-level atoms in the pair are supposed to be indistinguishable. This problem generalizes the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model of a single two-level atom interacting with the squeezed vacuum. The model of the pair of indistinguishable two-level atoms is equivalent to the problem of the equidistant three-level radiator with equal dipole moment matrix transition elements between the adjacent energy levels. Supposing that at the initial moment the field is in the squeezed vacuum state we obtain the exact analytical solution for the atom-field state-vector. By using this solution the quantum-statistical and squeezing properties of the radiation field are investigated. The obtained results are compared with those for the single two-level atom system. We observe that in the model of the pair of cold two-level atoms the exact periodicity of the squeezing revivals is violated by the analogy with the single two-level atom one.

Interaction of two two-level atoms with a single-mode squeezed field

Lei Xu, Zhiming Zhang, Jin-lin Chai

The N-photon interaction of two two-level atoms with a single-mode quantized radiation field is studied. The general expression for the state vector of the atom–field system is presented with the probability amplitudes in analytic form. For the initial condition in which the atoms are both at their upper levels and the field is in a squeezed state, we study the time evolution of the atomic population inversions and that of the statistics of the field. We find that the ratio of the two coupling constants, the initial squeezing of the field, and N have significant effects on the features of the atoms and of the field.

We study the interaction between the single-mode electromagnetic field and the pair of indistinguishable two-level atoms via the intensity-dependent coupling. This problem is equivalent to the equidistant three-level atom with equal dipole moment matrix transition elements between the adjacent levels. The exact analytical solution for the tom-field state- vector is obtained assuming that at the initial moment the field is in the Holstein-Primakoff SU (1,1) coherent state. The quantum-statistical and squeezing properties of the field are investigated. The obtained results are compared with those for the single two-level atom. It is observed that the exact periodicity of the field squeezing that takes place in the case of the single two-level atom is violated in the case of the pair of cold atoms.
