Abstract

We have written this article in the honor of our friend Vladilen Lethokov, who has produced so many brilliant ideas and results in the field of atomic and molecular physics and with whom we have had frequent unlightening discussions. We hope that the work described here will contribute to illustrate the richness of the field.

Lifetime of weakly bound dimers of ultracold metastable helium studied by photoassociation

Steven Moal, M. Portier, Nassim Zahzam +1 more

We describe two-photon photoassociation (PA) experiments operated in an ultracold gas of metastable $^{4}\mathrm{He}^{*}$ atoms in the $2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}S_{1}$ state. Atom-molecule dark resonances as well as Raman signals provide information on the exotic molecule in the least bound vibrational $J=2$, $v=14$ state of the $^{5}\ensuremath{\Sigma}_{g}^{+}$ interaction potential of two spin-polarized metastable atoms. The physical origin of the various two-photon PA signals is first discussed. Their linewidths are interpreted in terms of processes limiting the lifetime $\ensuremath{\tau}$ of the exotic molecule. A value of $\ensuremath{\tau}=1.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{s}$ is found, which significantly differs from two recent calculations of the Penning ionization rate induced by spin-dipole coupling [T. J. Beams et al., Phys. Rev. A 74, 014702 (2006); M. Portier and G. V. Shlyapnikov (unpublished)]. The limitation of $\ensuremath{\tau}$ by atom-molecule inelastic collisions is investigated and ruled out.

Some problems of the physics of exotic atoms

L. I. Men’shikov, Есеев Марат Каналбекович

The current status of the physics of exotic atoms is reviewed. The problem of the anomalous width of the kaonic helium 2p level is analyzed, experimental CPT invariance tests for the antihydrogen are discussed, and results of investigations on the metastability of the antiproton (as well as of ??, ??, K?, ??, ...) in helium are considered. A comparison is made of the well-known Condo model and the ionic model. In the latter, the ion (?ee) ? a so-called 'ioncule' ? forms after is stopped in its motion in helium. One of the ioncule's electrons is weakly bound, resides at one of the Efimov levels, and orbits at ~ 20 a.u. in the dipole field of the neutral 'atomcule' (?e). The lifetime of the ioncule is long (> 10? 5 s) and the antiproton's vibrational ? rotational transition frequencies ? are practically equal to the atomcule value (?? /? ~ 10? 5 ?10? 6 ) ? in agreement with laser-spectroscopy data. While the ionic model results on the quenching cross sections of metastable states by impurity atoms and molecules in helium agree well with experiment, the atomcule-based Condo model underrates the cross sections by 3 ? 4 orders of magnitude. The ionic model is also consistent with other experiments. Direct experimental tests of this model are discussed. A new interpretation of E Zavattini's group's laser-spectroscopy results on the 2s ? 2p-splitting in muonic helium is presented.
