Abstract

Studies of anomalous Lamb shift in 2p/sub 1/2/ state of hydrogen for photon-atom interaction as a function of relative dispersion frequency, refractive index contrast and propagation vector using quadratic fluctuations and randomness in an anisotropic model of Brillouin Zone (BZ) for p polarization are reported. The anomalous Lamb shift in 2p/sub 1/2/ level is significantly more than that obtained by using isotropic model which indicates that odd parity 2p/sub 1/2/ state of hydrogen is significantly influenced by introducing anisotropic behaviour of BZ. This work is new and it is fruitful to provide information about optical properties in laser action within the photonic crystal.

Measurement of the Lamb shift in the hydrogen atom

Yurii L. Sokolov, Valery P. Yakovlev

A principle is proposed for the observation of the stationary interference pattern of two phase-shifted components of the 2p (or 2s) state of the hydrogen atom (Yu. L. Sokolov, Sov. Phys. JETP 36, 243 (1973)); (Proc. 6-th Internat. Conf. on Atomic Phys., Riga, 1978, p. 207). An atomic interferometer, a device analogous in principle to a two-channel optical (such as Michelson's) interferometer, is used to measure the frequency of the (2s/sub 1/2/, F = 0)--(2p/sub 1/2/, F = 0) transition in the hydrogen atom, which is found to equal 909.9014 +- 0.0019 MHz. The corresponding Lamb shift is delta(H, n = 2) = 1057.8594 +- 0.0019 MHz.

Spontaneous Radiation and Lamb Shift in Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystals

Shiyao Zhu, Yaping Yang, Hong Chen +2 more

Spontaneous emission in photonic crystals with anisotropic three-dimensional dispersion relation is studied. If the upper level is below a characteristic frequency omega(1), or above omega(2), or between omega(1) and omega(2), the radiation is a localized field with a frequency in the band gap, or a propagating field with a frquency in the band, or a diffusion field, respectively. An analytical expression for the Lamb shift is obtained. The Lamb shift for the current case is small compared to that in an ordinary vacuum or in one- or two-dimensional photonic crystals due to lower density of states.

Optical photonic band gaps and the Lamb shift

Zhiyuan Li, Younan Xia A

A three-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) at optical wavelengths can significantly alter atomic spontaneous emission. However, a rigorous solution based on a full vectorial quantum electrodynamics shows that the Lamb shift for atomic hydrogen embedded in such a PBG differs negligibly from the value in vacuum. This is significantly contrasted with previous conclusions of an anomalous Lamb shift or an extraordinarily small Lamb shift, which were drawn based on scalar models.

Giant Lamb Shift in Photonic Crystals

Xuehua Wang, Yuri S. Kivshar, Ben–Yuan Gu

We obtain a general result for the Lamb shift of excited states of multilevel atoms in inhomogeneous electromagnetic structures and apply it to study atomic hydrogen in inverse-opal photonic crystals. We find that the photonic-crystal environment can lead to very large values of the Lamb shift, as compared to the case of vacuum. We also suggest that the position-dependent Lamb shift should extend from a single level to a miniband for an assembly of atoms with random distribution in space, similar to the velocity-dependent Doppler effect in atomic/molecular gases.

Tunable pass band of anomalous dispersion photonic crystals

Jiangtao Liu, Xiao Wen-Bo, Jie‐Hui Huang +3 more

The influence of laser beam on the transmittance properties of anomalous dispersion photonic crystals (PCs) is investigated. Our calculations show that the pass band of anomalous dispersion PCs is tunable when altering the electron population in the atomic ground state of the anomalous dispersion material by the optical pumping method. With circularly polarized pump light, a huge Faraday rotation can be achieved under weak light intensity. Tunable pass band of anomalous dispersion PCs may lead to important technological applications in the optically controlled optical switch.
