Abstract

We study the adiabatic dark-state evolutions in coherent creations of heteronuclear diatomic or triatomic molecules from an ultracold two-species atomic condensate. We find that, for different nonlinear systems, the relations between the adiabatic fidelities and the adiabatic parameters are in a universal power law but with quite different parameters.

Adiabatic condition for coherent atom–heteronuclear-molecule conversion

Hui Jing, F. Zheng, Yurong Jiang +1 more

Recently, Pu et al. developed an efficient strategy to find the adiabatic condition of a nonlinear system---i.e., the atom-homonuclear dimer conversion [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 050406 (2007)]. Here, by applying their method, we extend it to study the adiabatic condition of coherent atom--heteronuclear-diatomic- or -triatomic-molecule conversion. The different adiabatic evolutions in creating the homo- or heteronuclear dimers are compared. The impact of the two different reaction paths on the adiabatic conditions in creating the heteronuclear triatomic molecules is also discussed.

Properties of a coupled two-species atom–heteronuclear-molecule condensate

Lu Zhou, Weiping Zhang, Hong Yuan Ling +2 more

We study the coherent association of a two-species atomic condensate into a condensate of heteronuclear diatomic molecules, using both a semiclassical treatment and a quantum mechanical approach. The differences and connections between the two approaches are examined. We show that, in this coupled nonlinear atom-molecule system, the population difference between the two atomic species plays a significant role in the ground-state stability properties as well as in coherent population oscillation dynamics.

Coherent Atom-Trimer Conversion in a Repulsive Bose-Einstein Condensate

Hui Jing, Jing Cheng, Pierre Meystre

We show that the use of a generalized atom-molecule dark state permits the enhanced coherent creation of triatomic molecules in a repulsive atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, with further enhancement being possible in the case of heteronuclear trimers via the constructive interference between two chemical reaction channels.

Quantum atom-heteronuclear molecule dark state: Role of population imbalance

Hui Jing, Shuai Cui

Recently, the finite-number effect of initial atoms in coherent atom-molecule conversion was investigated by Zhao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 010401 (2008)]. Here, by extending to the atom-heteronuclear molecule dark state, we find that the initial populations imbalance of the atoms plays a significant role in quantum conversion rate and adiabatic fidelity. In particular, even for the finite total number of imbalanced two-species atoms, the mean-field conversion rate, contrary to the general belief, still can be remarkably close to the exact quantum results.

The creation of fermionic trimers is also briefly discussed.

Adiabatic fidelity for atom-molecule conversion in a nonlinear three-level Λ system

Shao-Ying Meng, Libin Fu, Jie Liu

By generalizing the definition of fidelity for the nonlinear system, we investigate the dynamics and adiabaticity of the population transfer for atom-molecule three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system on a stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). We find that the adiabatic fidelity for the coherent population trapping state or dark state, as the function of the adiabatic parameter, approaches to unit in a power law. The power exponent, however, is much less than the prediction of the linear adiabatic theorem. We further discuss how to achieve higher adiabatic fidelity for the dark state through optimizing the external parameters of the STIRAP.
