Abstract

Collisions of excited 113Cd(5 3P1) atoms with various molecular gases (N2, H2, D2, CO, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C2H4, O2) have been investigated using atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. By selective excitation of a hyperfine structure level with a pulsed dye laser and studying the time dependence of the fluorescence signals as a function of the buffer gas density the cross sections for quenching, fine structure transfer, and hyperfine structure transfer could be obtained. For N2 molecules the collisions can be described by a decoupling model as has been shown previously for the noble gases as collision partners.

Quenching of 52P potassium atoms by collisions with H2, N2and CH4

R. W. Berends, W. Kedzierski, A G McConkey +2 more

Potassium vapour, contained together with a buffer gas in a glass fluorescence cell at a controlled temperature, was irradiated with pulsed dye-laser radiation which excited the K atoms to the 5 2 P 1/2 or 5 2 P 3 / 2 state. The effective decay rate of the 5 2 P atoms was determined in relation to the buffer gas densities by methods of fluorescence spectroscopy with time resolution. The experiments yielded the total quenching (depopulation) cross sections of 19, 94 and 120 AA 2 for collisions with H 2 , N 2 and CH 4 molecules, respectively.

Collisional relaxation in 5(2)P potassium atoms.

R. W. Berends

Collisional excitation transfer and relaxation of K 5$\\sp2$P atoms in collisions with noble gases, as well as the radiative lifetimes of the K 5P, 6P and 7P fine-structure states have been investigated by methods of atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. Potassium vapour was mixed in a cell with a noble gas and selectively excited by pulsed dye-laser radiation to the 5$\\sp2$P$\\sb{1\\over2}$ or the 5$\\sp2$P$\\sb{3\\over 2}$ state in zero magnetic field and to the 5$\\sp2$P$\\sb{{1\\over 2}-{1\\over 2}}$ or the 5$\\sp2$P$\\sb{{3\\over 2}-{3\\over 2}}$ Zeeman substate in a field of 70 kG. Interferometric analysis of the fluorescence emitted from the directly (optically) excited state and that emitted from the collisionally populated states allowed the determination of the fine-structure mixing cross sections for collisions with He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in zero magnetic field. Excitation transfer between Zeeman substates was investigated for collisions between the selectively excited 5P atoms and He, Ne and Ar atoms, allowing the determination of the multipole relaxation (depolarization) cross sections for dipole, quadrupole and octupole decay, as well as the Zeeman and fine-structure mixing cross sections and orientation transfer cross sections. A comparison of theoretical calculations with the experimental data has been made and the rate equations governing multipole relaxation and including effects due to strong fine-structure mixing on the multipole relaxation, have been described in detail. The radiative lifetimes of the individual fine-structure components of the K 5P, 6P and 7P states have been determined experimentally by means of time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence techniques. These data are compared with numerous theoretical calculations and the available experimental values.Dept. of Physics. Collision-induced energy transfer in intermediate excited states of cesium

M. Łukaszewski, I. Jackowska

We report an application of laser spectroscopy techniques to a study of collision-induced interactions in atomic excited states. Due to pulsed dye laser excitation a considerable selective population of highly excited states of ccsium is obtained. Collision-induced transfer of excitation energy between the excited states results in modifications in time and spectral characteristics of observed atomic fluorescence. Quantitative information on the efficiency of collisional processes can be obtained from the measurements of time constants of the time-resolved fluorescence signals and/or from those of the integrated intensities of the fluorescence lines. Both possibilities are used in the present work. Perturbation of nD (n=8-14) and nS (n=1O-15) states of cesium in collisions with noble-gas atoms is investigated. The cross sections for the transfer of excitation between fine-structure substates of the nD states (J mixing) and for the nS-(n-4)F intermultiplet transfer are obtained.

Fine-structure mixing in the 9D state of caesium induced in collisions with noble-gas atoms

M. Łukaszewski, I. Jackowska

Cross sections for the transfer of excitation between fine-structure sublevels of the 9D state of caesium due to collisions with noble-gas atoms are measured. The experimental method employs stepwise excitation with a pulsed dye laser in the second step (6 2 P 3/2 to 9 2 D 5/2 ) and time-resolved detection of sensitised fluorescence 9 2 D 3/2 to 6 2 P 1/2 . The cross sections for the process Cs(9 2 D 3/2 )+A to Cs(9 2 D 5/2 )+A are (in units of 10 -14 cm 2 ) 7.6(1.5), 2.5(5), 2.7(5), 3.0(6) and 3.2(6) for A=He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe, respectively. For all the noble gases except helium the experimental cross sections are a few times smaller than the ones obtained in a recent semiclassical calculation.

Coherence Transfer between the 2P1/2 and 2P3/2 States in Potassium, Induced in Collisions with Noble Gas Atoms and with Molecules

B. Niewitecka, L. Krause

The transfer of coherence accompanying 42P1/2 → 42P3/2 transfer of excitation induced in collisions between 42P1/2 potassium atoms and noble gas atoms as well as some simple molecules, was studied in a series of sensitized fluorescence experiments. Mixtures of potassium vapor at 6 × 10−7 Torr with the various buffer gases were irradiated with circularly polarized D1(σ+) light and the relative intensities of the σ+ and σ− fractions of both the D1 and D2 fluorescent components were determined in relation to the pressures of the buffer gases. The experiments yielded the following cross sections for coherence transfer: K–He:1.7 Å2; K–Ne :0.8 Å2; K–Ar < 0.5 Å2; K–H2 :3.5 Å2; K–CH4 :7.0 Å2; K–CD4:7.7 Å2.
