Abstract

We propose a scheme to generate mesoscopic superpositions of two squeezed states of motion using a highly anisotropic two-dimensional trap in which the ion's motion is tightly bound in the Y direction. In our scheme, the ion is driven multichromatically by three codirectional laser beams along the X axis, as well as a resonant laser beam along the Y axis. We show that, with the appropriate chosen initial states, the desired states of motion are realized in the X direction when the system reaches its steady state, which is indicated by the extinction of the fluorescence from the ion.

Generation of two-mode squeezed pair-coherent states of the motion of a trapped ion

Shi‐Biao Zheng, Guang‐Can Guo

We propose a scheme for generating motional two-mode squeezed pair-coherent states of an ion trapped in a three-dimensional isotropic trap. It is based on the multichromatic excitation of the ion by six lasers in the x - y plane, and one in the z -axis. Under certain conditions, the system finally reaches the steady state, in which the vibrational motions in the x and y axes are in the two-mode squeezed pair-coherent state and the motion in the z -axis is in the vacuum state.

‘‘Dark’’ squeezed states of the motion of a trapped ion

J. I. Cirac, A. S. Parkins, R. Blatt +1 more

We propose a scheme for preparing coherent squeezed states of motion in an ion trap based on the multichromatic excitation of a trapped ion by standing- and traveling-wave light fields. The squeezed state is produced when the beat frequency between two standing-wave light fields is equal to twice the trap frequency, and is indicated by a ``dark resonance'' in the fluorescence emitted by the ion.

Vibrational pair cat states

Shih-Chuan Gou, Jörg Steinbach, P. L. Knight

We propose a scheme for generating mesoscopic superpositions of two distinguishable pair coherent states of motion in a two-dimensional ion trap. In our scheme, the trapped ion is excited bichromatically by five laser beams along different directions in the X-Y plane of the ion trap. Four of these have the same frequency and can be derived from the same source, reducing the demands on the experimentalist. We show that if the initial vibrational state is given by a two-mode Fock state, as demonstrated in recent experiments, these highly correlated two-mode ``Schr\"odinger cat'' states are realized when the system reaches its steady state, which is indicated by the extinction of the fluorescence emitted by the ion. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dark pair coherent states of the motion of a trapped ion

Shih-Chuan Gou, Jörg Steinbach, P. L. Knight

We propose a scheme for generating vibrational pair coherent states of the motion of an ion in a two-dimensional trap. In our scheme, the trapped ion is excited bichromatically by three laser beams along different directions in the $X\ensuremath{-}Y$ plane of the ion trap. We show that if the initial vibrational state is given by a two-mode Fock state, the final steady state, indicated by the extinction of the fluorescence emitted by the ion, is a pure state. The motional state of the ion in the equilibrium realizes that of the highly correlated pair coherent state.

Generation of motional pair coherent states in an anisotropic ion trap

Shi‐Biao Zheng

A scheme is proposed for generating motional pair coherent states of an ion in a two-dimensional anisotropic trap. In the scheme the ion is excited by two laser beams in the x - y plane. Under certain conditions, the system finally reaches the steady state given by the product of the ground electronic state with the motional pair coherent state. The scheme can be generalized to prepare pair cat states and two-mode SU (1,1) intelligent states in a two-dimensional anisotropic trap.

Preparation of superpositions of SU(2) coherent states of the motion of a trapped ion.

Shi‐Biao Zheng

A scheme is presented for the generation of superpositions of two two-mode SU(2) coherent states of the motion for a trapped ion. In the scheme an ion is trapped in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic potential and driven by two resonant laser beams. Under certain conditions, the motional two-mode SU(2) cat state can be generated after a conditional measurement on the internal state following the ion-laser interaction.
